I'm not sure what's worse... not closing or announcing at 7:30. I hope the kids at the busstop were told to go home. What about parent's and child care? What's so hard...it's 5 below out.

I know that this site is not really the forum for this, but I had to say it.

Open Letter to Mr Achramovitch Superintendent of Hamburg Schools
Dear Sir
I am just writing to let you know(I think you’re a dumb a**) I am a working in parent with a child who attends your schools. . Each morning I am up at 5 am to feed, dress and get my child on the bus by 6:35 am. I do this because it is my job as a parent. There are some days I have extra things added in like shoveling snow, dealing with rain of even finding some other arrangement for my child, again I do this because it’s my job .BUT when I have to take the day off work to drive home from work to get my child off the bus Because your lazy BUTT couldn’t decide to cancel school before 7am is just ridicules. Mr. A… GROW A PAIR AND MAKE THE CALL…. SOONER
Yours truly
A day without pay

Here is reality, I am a teacher in Hamburg. I love my job. I live in a district that was closed by 5:30 am this morning. Seeing that Hamburg was open ( which is not my gripe, I was excited to see my students having not seen them in 2 days) I called my mother to babysit my kids who were off. My mother is great, and never says no to spend the day with the kids. She arrived at my house at 7:15, I left and headed off to work. I heard on WBEN school was closed at 7:35. So, I turned around and headed home, only to learn from my mother that she had cancelled a very important doctors appointment she had scheduled to help me out and stay with my kids. When she called to see if she could go to the appointment they had already called someone on the wait list. So now my mother will wait another month for an appointment. All of this could have been avoided if the weather was taken seriously 2 hours earlier. The forecast didnt change, we knew what was happening. This is Buffalo and we have days like this and no child should be outside. Thank you for considering all the lives that were turned upside down this morning. Now for some hot coffee, and to correct some papers.

This is just inconsiderate, unprofessional, and plain STUPIDITY! What is the point in waiting until 7:30 to call off when my thermometer tells me it is 10 degrees below zero!?! Is it a competition with other districts to hold out? Is it a lack of common sense? Or is it a stick it to you thing?

Whatever the reason or lame excuse, it isn't considering the safety of the children, which SHOULD be the top priority. It is obvious this genius had NO intention of calling off. The middle and high schoolers had to have already been en route to or at school by 7:30. Most teachers were probably already there at this point as well. Not to mention that Hamburg is full of walkers that should not be walking in these frigid temperatures! I already had my elementary school child up and ready to go with the car running (no way I was letting my kid wait out for the bus in sub zero temps).

You are showing your true colors, Mr. Superintendent...you do NOT care about these children, their parents, or the staff when you make a bonehead call like this one. Nice job BOE, you picked a real winner!

Are you kidding me!!! for those of us teachers who drive a half hour or more to Hamburg, it is a blatent insult and leack of consideration for us and our families to be so stupid as to not close school when the thermometer reads -10 and wind chills minus 20 but so ok, the decision to stay open is made, we brave the cold(even though the majority of schools and child related businesses!) in wny are closed,. but to be told that school has been closed at 7:35, as you are pulling into the parking lot, is pure insanity!! Maybe the district would like to reimburse us for gas?somebody looks reqally stupid today, and it ain't the underpaind teachers!

Anonymous said...

I'm glad our well paid teachers have the day off. They are worked too hard for that salary and those benefits. I bet there are a lot more posts on this board today since most of the comments come from disgruntled teachers.

Anonymous said...

Underpaid teacher, my guess is you sent your message from your phone. I say this because you have many spelling errors. Its OK, we know our teachers can read, write and spell. I just wonder if the Administration have these skills. Do we need to sign Achramo up for science disasters at HHS? He may learn a few things about Mother Nature and her wrath! BTW, was Achramo a teacher for any longer than a couple of years? And wasnt that back in the 1980s?

Anonymous 6:08. If you are posting you arent working, so those in glass houses do not cast stones. Disgruntled teachers...oh please. Hamburg teachers have been taking neglect from administration and their former union president for over 15 years, yet they still do a great job with our kids. Disgruntled? Not my kid's teachers. They go above and beyond the call of duty. In fact, one teacher at the high school gave my neighbors boy a ride home ( he saw him walking without hat gloves). The teacher was at school at 6:50 a.m. Disgruntled, I have never witnessed that.

Isn't there anything that can be done so this doesn't happen again….can we fire him yet?

GET A PETITION said...

Sure, if you want to get rid of the Superintendent, all you need to do is organize and go to the BOE/RSB, with a signed petition to get rid of this guy. You want to make the case realistic. You should check with Sally Stephenson because she already has started this ball rolling because he lied about her and others. Dont forget, he calls the police to attend those riotous assemblies to "taser" those who actually speak. Does anyone else think its odd that they have a security system at the Admin Bldg, but the High School is wide open, kids come and go, the cameras have been broken for years. But dont worry our administrators are locked up tight on Abbott Road.

6:08...you are an idiot! Anyone complaining about the teachers in this situation is either:

1. A BOE member
2. An administrator
3. Cliff Huen
4. or a complete moron

because this isn't about the teachers, it is about the kids. For the safety of the kids school should have been closed at 6:00 AM. That way half of them wouldn't have already been out walking in Arctic conditions! To make matters worse, rumor has it that we only closed because buses wouldn't start, not because of concerns for safety.

So really, the above list of fools who find every reason under the sun to complain about Hamburg's excellent staff, please focus on the reason we're all here: THE STUDENTS.

Anonymous said...

I swear they keep schools open because enough staff will show up. Teachers should call off when its below zero so I dont have to freeze waiting for my bus.

Anonymous said...

I would of closed last night like Dr. Crawford use to. This 7:30 time is too late and now my wife is on her way back home because i cant get off work and the kids came back home. Please Fix.

Did Steven just give himself the day off?

Anonymous said...

It was at 7:13. Great it right Concerned.

Open your eyes said...

Who cares if it was 7:13 OR 7:15...the point is, it was too late and it was because of buses, not safety! Anyone wanting to defend this action isn't looking at it logically and certainly isn't considering the children.

Mother of Four :
I watched all morning waiting for the schools to close.... then at seven thirty after I warmed up the car my middle schooler got a text SCHOOL CLOSED. Get with the program Achromo make a decision.. Now I am out of work with no pay and no child care for my elementary students. Does he want to give up some of that heafty pay to compensate me for my 10 dollars an hour I would have made today if he would have made the simple decision one hour earlier. Loser.

word is that it was the buses that wouldn't start. Regardless, the schools should have been closed with the # of walkers and the extreme cold.

For the love of God, please dont tell me that Keith Fisher doesnt update his buses to the kind that start in cold weather. Whats he doing with the 4 million plus contract? I bet he is laying on a beach in West Palm.

The problem is bigger then we think said...

I find it funny that the School District is blaming the Bus company. When school was first canceled there was nothing on the District's website about the Buses, but that popped up right after I called to complain about the Bus that picks up my son at 6:35. the Bus Aid was scraping the frost off the inside of the windows .If the bus can drive all the way from garage on Lake View to Patchen and still have frosted windows its too damn cold for kids to be going to school.Lets face it Mr. A JUST OWN PUT TO IT you dropped the Ball

Ice on the roads said...

You give it to him Patchen!!! I feel bad for the bus drivers. There job is tough enough, now they have to risk life and limb. Ice on windows is very dangerous. No one needs to have a bus accident. Didnt SA see the horrible bus accident in Rochester last week? Heck, he lives there, ya'd think he watches the news.

Anonymous said...

I watched the news until 7:15 a.m. when I left for work. I worried about my students, especially the ones from Boston, who were waiting out in the cold. It seemed like cruel and unusual punishment for those poor little souls. I arrived at school at my typical time of 7:20 a.m., passing many buses on the way, only to be turned away at the door. I passed many other buses on the way home.

I returned home to spend the last four hours working. I have been working on future lesson plans, redoing the plans that couldn't be done today, refiguring my "To Do" list that can only be done at school, etc.

I took a break to check this blog to see if anyone was angry about the wrong done to kids today. I did not think I was the one wronged as I was ready to go. It saddened me to see that someone thought that this was a nice little paid day off for teachers. I AM WORKING TODAY- JUST NOT IN THE BUILDING, AND THAT WASN'T MY CALL!

I have been careful never to respond to this blog, but you all must know that I am not alone. Many Hamburg teachers are working today. Many teachers work well into the night and on the weekends, if not at their teaching job, at another job to make ends meet. We work through the summer without pay, and/or again, at a second job. We put a good deal of our own money back into our teaching because this district does not give our students or us what we all need to be successful. We work on our time off so that we can make our students the best they can be.

We are not asking for anything unreasonable. We knew we would not make big bucks as teachers. However, we did misguidingly think that we would make a salary in the same ball park as the teacher seven miles up or down the road.

I am leaving now so that I can get back to work, the work I love and live for as a teacher.

Anyone who has a teacher in their life knows how hard we work. Its those who think they know and dont that make the wise cracks.

I knew it was Fishers call! Check out the school web page for more info.. Get rid of Steve and keep Fisher in charge of transportation!

Anonymous said...

The only thing that would make the district look more foolish is if the posting on its website regarding the schools closing was posted next to the posting that was on the site regarding Steve O recording the School BOE meeting. Maybe he should post his love note to staff regarding this blog on the district website. What a a fool.

Steve Achramovitch closes HCSD due to Fisher Bus... Who cares about walking across the Village in Sub Zero temps.

I found out on this Blog schools were closed. I left my high school kids to go to work, and they started walking in the bitter cold. Is this reality?

Speaking of all the things we should post on the website: how about we post the new big guy's "reform packet" listing all the ways he plans to reform (ruin) this district. He has big plans, people, and as we all witnessed today his plans don't invlove caring about the welfare of our children. This is who our BOE CHOSE for us? The message couldn't be more clear: this BOE does not have the best interest of the community or students at heart!!!

MOMDAD, You got that right, he is hiring consultants left and right. Someone should ask how much he has spent at Harris Beach?

The guy's a joke. He STILL hasn't taken the time for any sort of introductory meeting with the staff.

It just plain STINKS that the BOE and the admins generally dislike their staff and it seems like they are going out of their way as much as possible to show it.

It's just not a healthy environment for anyone.

I left for work this morning at 7 expecting my kids would head off to the High School, like every M-F. I found out at 12 noon with a visit to the blog that my kids were off. When I called home, they were sleeping. Had I known they'd be home they would have had a list of things to do. I DO NOT LIKE IDLE KIDS. What on earth was the district thinking?? Apparently they were not thinking.

BOE, you had better consult with the myriad of lawyers at Harris Beach, from the Hudson to the Niagara, before you make a remarks on this website. Really RSB, are you letting SA to spend tens of thousands on mediocre attorneys, who in my opinion are robbing the taxpayer of their money. RSB and Administration, you alread blew threw 30K, and how much are you willing to spend to defend, in my opinion, the liars of all liars. Hamburg ask the RSB how much they spend on the Harris Beach attorney in Albany, the one on Rochester and those in Buffalo, all working in concert to support the BOE in their malfeasance. TAXPAYERS DEMAND YOUR RSB AND SA TELL YOU ABOUT THEIR CRAZY LEGAL BILLS!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

HARRIS BEACH LAWYERS, HOW MUCH ARE YOU, AS A MATTER OF OPINION ARE YOU STEALING FROM THE HAMBURG TAXPAYER. Harris Beach lawyers, we know you are reading this....guess what....the BOE is in violation of Open Meeting Laws and have been for years. Disprove this at $300 per hour!!!!

Anonymous said...

i second IN THE KNOW someone MUST ask at the next school board meeting ?HOW MUCH IS TAXPAYER PAYING PER HOUR TO HARRIS BEACH? public info not asking about personel, asking about taxpayer money...make them lie or confess on the record...PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP...

The Hamburg Sun reported that Achramo said "The health department advises all schools to close if the wind chill is 20 below zero." So sorry, Hamburg walkers. I guess you better buy an eskimo parka because you will be walking in negative 18 temps, that is unless the busses won't start.
