Anyone who has a special Ed student the most important thing you can do for your child is understand the IEP process. After having a hell of a time with the IEP process in the middle school I got a child advocate. I understand my experience may be different from other parents, I also know that just because your child has an IEP doesn’t mean that your child is Disabled. After fighting with the district over My sons IEP not Being followed and trying to be strong armed into a IEP that I did not agree to I called People Inc. and got a child advocate from them . What a saint she keeps the school district representative in check and call the district on not following the IEP.
I don’t know if there are any other Parents out there that have had or are having Issues with the school district/ teachers not Following IEP’S or Interpreting them as they see fit . But after doing a little research I do know that Hamburg has had issues in the past. The district still isn’t following my son’s IEP to the letter, but thanks to an amazing teacher this is the best I have felt about my son’s IEP.

Parents- watch carefully what is included in your child's IEP. The higher ups sneak in things you may not be aware of. At the MS, sped students only receive support in english and math everyday. social and science only every other day. other classes--no support.

Please get involved. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

Thank you,
This is our blog. We are heard more here than ever in our school system. My son also has had things snuck into his IEP. I now know that I am not alone, just by this blog. For this I am grateful.
I will be at that meeting at Armor. Thank you concerned for all your efforts and most of all an open MIKE. Love all of you

Thank you, thank you, thank you,
I finally have a place to shout out my frustrations with this district over my son's IEP. It is like pulling teeth here with this district. At times ignored and others attitude that we are just a number here in this district. My son like (Super) child has a great teacher who has made all the difference in the world. I am new to this site, concerned you have provided an opportunity for us parents with kids who are special to connect with each other. Thank you

Thank you for the information. I too have had nothing but empty lies given to my child. It seems no matter who you talk to...whether the school or the administration building...nothing seems to change. Words alone cannot explain how I feel right now about everything my child has not been given the opportunity to do. The killer is you have to be A
BEACH to be heard...and sometimes that doesn't work either! I am so disqusted with this district right now.....because they always choose to do nothing....OR LIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PLease know that teachers often feel frustrated by the whole process too. I am an educator outside of HC and a parent of a student w/ special needs. I often attempt to advocate for my students, just to be shot down in the process. I can give them what they need, under the table if you will, but when they proceed onto the next grade level or school the whole process starts again until the teacher gets to know the student. Unless its in writing its not legal. Parents make sure you understand the process and your kids get the amount of services they need. It is very easy to take away services, but difficult to add later. High School and college are difficult places for kids w/ special learning needs. (And this does NOT mean they are disabled)

There are a few things you may want to do if you are having issues with the school/ district and the IEP. Ask for another IEP Meeting you can have as many as you want (last year I think we had 4). In New York you can tape the IEP meeting. The day of your meeting just show up with a recorder tell them you are recording this meeting so you can keep track if the info. (If you have an Iphone or Ipad there is a great APP called Dragon Dictation.) If you are told that you CANNOT tape it .WITH THE RECORDER ON ASK THE PERSON THERE NAME AND JOB TITLE at this point most people will back down. If you are told to stop recording again stop the meeting and ask to reschedule. Contact a child advocate or lawyer (if you bring a lawyer the district will not hold the meeting until they have a lawyer present.) any lawyer will tell them you have every right as a parent or guardian to record the meeting. If you don’t leave the meeting with a new IEP in place it’s ok , the old one stays in effect … (so your child does not lose the services you are getting at that point.) Do not let them rush you out the door this meeting is for your child’s education. If the school only planed on a 45 minute meeting and it takes 2 hours. It’s not your fault they are on your time, you are not on there’s. Bring a friend or family member someone who knows you and your child ... it helps if this person can tell when you get upset and doesn’t mind speaking up for you. Document, Document, Document , create a three ring binder with copies of report cards , progress reports , notes to and from teachers , any assignment or test that you have questions on or examples of things that they are not doing as a part of the IEP… this helps if you need to ask for a grade change or call someone to the carpet on an IEP issue … make sure all the stuff in the binder is not the original document this way if they ask you can just give them the copy…Remember it never hurts to ask and sometimes that is the only way you will get it... bring water

Diana, You do realize the the NYS School Board Association are a collective of knuckleheads much like Hamburgs RSB. They continue to fatten the Administration and DO very little for teachers. Thank you for your attachment. We now know you are on the BOE, as my cousin who serves on the BOE in Alden tells me that this page is only available to members. Perhaps, Diana, you should examine your own conscience, you gave Stevie 170K, and he has been a fraud since day 1. And what about your fat cats in administration that do NOTHING.

With personnel costs accounting for nearly 70 percent of school budget expenditures, local taxpayers have been forced by the state to foot the bill for all of the cost increases in health care, pensions and contractually required salary increases...

HCSD must start making the School Board Minutes available to the PUBLIC. Consider the savings in payroll, when the person who types up those misleading Board Briefs stops wasting time misleading the public. No doubt the Superintendent then has to approve them. Heres a news flash...RSB and Steve, just put the BOE minutes on line and cut out the misleading Briefs. We are the only school in NYS that does this. Again, a tool to mislead the public. I want BOE minutes ON LINE! STAT

Special Needs parents need to show up tonight also! It is very clear they will take away anything they can for our kids! All I ask is for these parents to fight for their children....because they are so worth it!

I have a question for all readers of special needs students.....does special transportation include field trips and other school functions?

Anonymous said...

Bring your concerns and complaints about Special Education. Yes it's needed but how much extra should they get while we fall behind? Hamburg needs to look at the other end too because it's dangerous to let very bright kids slip through the cracks. These Children become depressed and want revenge for wasted time. I want to scream at the BOE so bad but can't due to my job title.

Has the Board asked Achramo for concessions? Oh wait, they increased the salary line for the the superintendent.

anti-Diana 8 said...

Is it true that the administrators union voted for a 3% raise? Has the Board asked for administrators to roll back their salaries to pre 2009 levels? Has the Board thought of cutting back to four associate/assistant superintendents instead of six? If enrollment has not increased, why is the number of administrators increasing?

Anonymous said...

For the one questioning Special Ed services...are you for real! Since when do these children lose their rights because they learn differently. I can speak for both ends.....because I do have a very bright child in the district too! This does not mean that their sibling should lose out because they learn at a different pace. I don't care about the money! These kids have rights too!

February 17, 2011 6:12 AM
Most of the time if the class is going on a field trip that requires transportation they will provide it. The school may ask you to be a Chaperone. It’s been my experience that if it’s a local and I am chaperoning I will just drive my own car with my child. Because it’s easier for me. If it an extended trip like Philadelphia you are not only asked to chaperone your child but 4 to 5 other children as well … I don’t have a problem in doing that. And yes you will have to pay your own way.
Now as a taxpayer and a parent of a Special Ed. Student , why is the district paying for two bus company’s most kids that ride the bus to school are riding Fisher Busses . My son who has to ride in a wheel chair to school rides a Hamburg School Car . Yet each year I get a letter from Fisher telling me that my student has to meet the bus at the end of the road. Each year I have to call and let them know that once again my son is disabled and need to ride in a wheelchair. This always gets an oops your son will be on a different bus. A bus that picks my child up 35 mins before the Fisher Bus . So my son get on the bus at 6:30am even though school starts at 8:03. He doesn’t get dropped off at school until 7:50 I would like to know why it takes an hour and a half to get to school but the return trip is only 25 mins ?

So you are telling me that my student is the reason why your Johnny or Janet is slipping through the cracks and becoming depressed,or that my child isn’t bite . My son takes all the regular classes. He is in line to get his Regents Diploma and is an Honor Roll Student .he is also in the top 90 % of his class Yes he has a personal aid and has special ed teachers is some of his classes, they will be the first ones to tell you that they don’t just help him they are helping all the students in that class if your student is getting board with the class why have you not put him in to an AP class … your are trying to blame your students failure and yours as a parent on my child . Get over it how long do you spend with your child working on homework or teaching him at home. Or do you just expect him/ her to do their homework .I spend hours each night going over homework and note making sure my child is understanding what is taught each day

sunlight said...

One more thing .keep in mind that if the school district cannot meet the IEP needs they can release the student. then the parents can send the child to private school but the school district losses the funding for that child because the district would be paying for private school

Anonymous said...

The reason Hamburg pays for two bus services is quite simple! There are special needs children who need the smaller bus with an aide on board....also in case know one has noticed....many general education students tend to bully these kids. Yes, I am sure your child would never do that...but I know for a fact this happens quite often. So please spare me the question of why we have two bus services! Thank You

thank you for the answer about bus info .... but your telling me Fisher has no " short Buses " or that Hamburg school car has no regular buses . why are we not asking the district to find a bus company that can meet our needs ... its got to be cheaper to pay for one bus company that can provide both then pay for two

To anonymous 5:58....what work are you talking about? If our children actually got work to help them with their education we would be delighted. This is our whole problem with this district...it's the lack of education that really annoys us to no end. So please wake up! This district has decided to do as little as possible...and pretty much have told some teachers the same thing! I cannot believe how some people feel these children are so worthless...maybe they feel the same way about you!!!!! I know I do!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am the mother of a a child in the schools and one coming up. While I love the fact that Hamburg busses preschool, wouldn't taht be a better place to start trimming, rather than specail areas, lab classes, and electives? I would rather be inconvienced and drive my kid to PreK than have them lose essential programs. Let's face it, once they are cut they are never coming back. And why is it taht Hamburg is in this situation? Times are tough, but other districts seem to be facing nowhere near the amount of cuts we are. What gives?

I'm a former student at HHS. I spent years watching sped kids pick up recycling every tuesday and taking it out to the dumpster. I always had this question in my mind but never had a place to ask it. In no way am I trying to being rude or belittle what these kids do. I have a very legitimate question and am hoping for an honest answer. What kind of future do these kids have?

Whats does being a professional mean? May I sit in and learn? Do you need to be a Parent or Professor to attend this meeting?

To the former student...I commend you! Many parents believe what the district has to say about their kids! I for one don't! I believe my special needs child is capable of doing many amazing things! Too bad no one will give them the chance! I can tell you right now my child will not be recylcing anything for anyone but themselves. If hamburg refuses to educate my child they can pay another district that will as far as I am concerned!

A teacher said...

Parents- please don't put the blame on the teachers. Many students who have IEP's are placed in situations where the kid AND the teacher are set up to fail. How about a class of students with 13 kids with IEP's out of a class of 22+? Impossible to help both reg. and special ed. Esp. because some of these classes only have a sped teacher every other day. The foreign language teachers do not even get assistance from a sped teacher in their classroom when they could have over 10 sped kids in a class of 20 or more. Many sped students have difficulty in English, now a foreign language with no support......its the system and admin not the teachers, kids or parents.

Ask the administrators how your kid with an IEP is going to get the help they need in this type of system.

sunshine said...

I am not blaming teachers as a whole. I know that the system, as far as IEP’S goes, is set up for the core subjects. I also know that as a teacher you have to sign off on each student’s IEP that you will be teaching. So I think the real question is. Why is the school setting you up to fail your student’s .when you are put in the situation where you have to instruct 13 kids with IEP ‘S in class likes a foreign language at the same time ? It’s almost impossible. But as a teacher are you speaking to school administrators, asking them how can I possibly make my lesson plan so flexible to accommodate all of the IEP’S. And if you feel it’s ,impossible don’t sign off on that IEP and make it known that you cannot honor that IEP . I know that in my child’s case subjects outside his core classes his IEP states that subjects must be chunked (example if his foreign language class has an assignment that is 50 questions that’s due in 2 days his work should be chunked out over 3 or 4 days depending on the amount of writing. ) I as a parent do not feel that is asking too much. You could understand why just by looking at my child. Now all of this chunking could more or less be overlooked if the school was using his laptop more effectively ….

A teacher again said...

Sunshine-- teachers have no voice with administration, only parents have a chance. Any parents of IEP kids should ask about the number of students, both IEP and reg ed in their classes and speak up. It could get worse with the possible cuts.

Anonymous said...

It is only going to get worse with the super's plan to put 24 in each class as the new norm. Hamburg teachers care so much about the students and most voice concerns, problems, and suggestions. The problem is, there is NO professional courtesy or respect in this district. The BOE and admin. don't care what the teachers have to say about what is best for the students.

to 1st amendment,
It is no secret that the good old boys club(few girls) are the movers and shakers of our tax dollars. Many benefits are received from our tax dollars. It is our job to investigate, if the bussing is bid out, that the BID SPECKS are written so that it is open to many bidders not bid specific only to Fisher Bus Company. I would like to point out that our two adjacent districts O.P and Frontier much larger districts pay significantly less in transportation than Hamburg. I would also like to point out that Union Pleasent, Charlotte Ave, many of the HS and MS students are walkers, unlike the two other districts mentioned. It makes you pause and take notice. The district needs to examine this transportation item, when they are threatening the most direct and important item to our children, programs and teachers. We are behind you teachers and we vote.

Achramovore

Oh! Achramovore has come here from Greece
In all school districts his goal was to fleece
And with his glib tongue he did barbs reject
His actual purpose no one could suspect
So faithless in love, so eager to score
There ne’er was a stud like Achramovore

How boldly he entered the great Hamburg Hall
Our students and staff saw a Muffin walk tall
They groveled before him and swooned at his feet
The women especially all suffered from heat
So faithless in love, yet the masses adore
There ne’er was a stud like Achramovore

Emerged a Board member most eager to prance
By dauntless Lothario succumbed to a trance
Minions now followed their movements with glee
“twas a fabulous sight, and all of it free
So faithless in love, they sank to the floor
There ne’er was a stud like Achramovore

In years past this roué departed Ken West
A desk top conquest still a legend with zest
To those of you who now seek fresh meat
Mull over this chap but be very discreet
So faithless in love, to new heights he’ll soar
There ne’er was a stud like Achramovore

The iep meeting is tonight. This is an important meeting to attend. Keep focused on your child and what supports. They need and your part in this new iep format. The cuts will be what they will be for all students... That is separate from staying informed and understanding your Childs rights within their IEP. Parent Network is a great resource and we are lucky to have their involvent. It is also important as a parent of a child with an iep to network and know other parents of children with IEP... So grab a coffee grab a friend and gain some information! See you all there tonight!
