How does HCSD Compare?

The State Education Department released test scores from 2009-2010 school year last week.  Please go to the Buffalo News website and search the results [click here to search 8-12] and [click here to search 3-8]  Play around a little bit and compare the schools and the results.  If you would like to compare this year to previous years, go to the State Education website [click here].  Also on the School Zone page are District's undesignated fund balances [click here for fund balances].  Try not to get too upset when you see Hamburg's $700,000, when only a short seven months ago in July, Hamburg had $4.2 million in reserves.

Here is what's sad: the word is really spreading fast about Hamburg and we are becoming a joke. I have many friends living and/or working in other districts asking me about what's going on in Hamburg. The other day a friend of mine said to me "Just a few years ago Hamburg was the place to be. Teachers wanted to get hired there. Parents were proud to send their kids to school there. What happened?" I don't even know how to respond. I feel embarrassed! Thanks a lot BOE and administration. You have ruined Hamburg's reputation and turned us into a laughing stock.

Why doesnt Hamburg just make the grades up they send into the state of NY The high school principal makes grades up, why dont they all? And the we can all just pretend our kids our getting an education.

I agree with "embarrassed". I \was informed that Hamburg Schools was the topic at a faculty meeting in another county, about how to not be proactive and what a sorry state we were in!!

Who cares lets just focus on the budget and teaching our children as much as possible,

Mac Daddy - that's just the problem. If something isn't done our children are the one's who are going to suffer. Last year the GT program was just one of the things that got cut. I don't know if my kiddos would have qualified for it, but its nice to know that there is a place to enrich those kids. The state has raised the passing rate on the state ELA exam to 85%. The insanity of that is for another discussion. All kids learn in different ways, Large class sizes and less one-on-one make that much harder for kids to get what they need. The stakes are high for everyone.

If you click on all schools in Erie County, you will get a list of the state test scores from highest to lowest rank. I know for ELA 3-8 exams, the multiple choice was doubled last year, making the writing worth very little. As a result, scores dropped drastically in every school district. On that list, Hamburg has beaten quite a few schools. The kids did well comparatively.Orchard Park, Frontier, Clarence and Sweet Home are all ranked much lower than we are. If you hear someone bashing our BOE or superintendent, odds are they have their facts correct. However, if you hear someone bashing our children, educate them on the facts first before they accuse us of being an embarrassment.

6:00am - agreed. THe Hamburg scores are good, esp compared with our neighbor and peers. We even beat Williamsville in several categories.

I agree that we are doing well right now, but the reports you see our the results of the last few years, not this year or the future. If programs are cut and class sizes increased, what do you think the data will look like in a few years. I don't pay a fortune in taxes to live her to settle for average at best. I want a system that will support both of my children's needs...the one who requires special education services and the one who needs a strong enrichment program (ie, gifted and talented.)
