Jeff Stahler Comic

This comic appeared yesterday in the Buffalo News.  The comic is funny on so many levels, but after contemplating its message I started to get angry.  I couldn't help asking myself, what happened with the grade changes at the High School?

What happened? Gallagher got a 4 percent raise, he moved a teacher to shut them up, and fired another teacher to hide his filthy act. He should be sent to the breadlines for frauding education.

What happpen with the grade changes at the HS? When I called the former supt. regarding this incident, he assured me that it would be corrected. I trusted that he would investigate this grade fraud and make it whole. I was made aware that he ignored me on this, and as a matter of fact tried to cover it up for the HS principal Mr Gallagher. My daughter wasn't involved in this grading issue, except that she didn't have her rightful place in the top ten. She will tell you as many others that #2 should have been #1. School Board as I've been told was involved in this incident. I should not be surprised since the Pres of the School Board Dr Calkins ran a AP class of 3 for her daughter. What about a little honesty here from the former supt. and this new guy. It seems to be a culture of cheating and lying. This discusting action has and will always affect these kids. As someone has stated the ranking of the class of 2010 will always be in question. Ten years from now at their reunion this topic will still be brewing.

principal should be removed said...

Thank you concerned,

just think that our thoughless, spineless principal did this to our kids. He should be fired for his actions.

That's why Crawford and Kerr bolted from the dist. Grade manufacturing, lies, dupeing the ignorant & too trusting school board. But this time they went too far, I believe that they directed Mike Gallagher to change those grades.

Anonymous said...

Do you think Gallagher will do it again for his daughter who is a junior now?

hs kid said...

hey gallagher how about changing my grades i need a boost

hamburger helper said...

Here's what happened:

1. Mike wanted the grades to be closer to the first quarter grades so he suggested, if you will, a curve for certain classes which had shown first quarter instruction working while during the second quarter either the material, teacher, or students failed to connect.

2. He suggested changing the grades while never following through.

3. Out of the loop Stevo had spoken on this matter but when you listen to him he says "IF" NOT "SENSE" these grades where changed it would have affected the class rank...

Mike Gallagher is a good man whose heart is in the right place. He's not a cheater. The whole scene was a mess for which he takes some blame. But, he's not the "bad guy" you're making him out to be. He is a good leader and I think the faculty and the students look up to him. Respectfully, Concerned (younger) Teacher

Younger teacher, you must be nuts. No teacher at HHS looks up to MG. He is a liar and he is untrustworthy, never stands up for his staff. There's a vote of no confidence brewing against him. He is a liar.

Anonymous said...

In all truthfulness, I really don't care. It's over and done and never to happen again (let's hope). Why rehash this?

M gallager is a liar. Lied about grades, lies about teachers, and I heard even was called a liar underoath by a judge. He makes up storied, lives in the land of oz. Hides the drug problems in the highschool, and now kids have sex in the bathrooms. Kid in an emt shirt was cut in the deed today. What does gallager do? Lie. Get rid of him, he is a dangerous person.

"Younger Teacher", I doubt you really are what you claim to be. If it was true, then undoubtedly you would have been already laid off, or at minimum - your friends and co-workers would have. You definitely are not at the high school - because your sentiments clearly do not reflect the current state of the staff. Morale is at an all-time low, and then is an absolute lack of trust within the building - including the actions of Mr Gallagher. If you believe otherwise, then you have been grossly misinformed or just plain ignorant.

I, personally, do not agree with making him a total scapegoat. I have no doubt that he is just doing what he has been told to do - and for that, I do not envy his position. But the fact remains that he has, at the very least, made some questionable decisions that have had an overall negative affect on the way the HS is being portrayed.

I think Dr Caulkins deserves much more of the blame for district-wide problems. She is overly opinionated, and the words that come out of her mouth are not based on any empirical study - they are merely her uneducated opinions. She obvioulsy is an intellegent woman. But her area of expertise is medicine - not education. What would she think of a teacher being on her practice's board of directors? She would think exactly what we think of her - that person has no business making those types of decisions.

People think that they are qualified to be on the school board, or run it, because they have experiences with schools - unfortunatley that experience is limited to only when they were the students. It would be like me saying I can run a hospital because I've been a patient in one.

What people need to ask themselves, is "Why would someone want to be on a school board to begin with?". The answer is universal, because they have their own agenda. Be it a personal vendetta, a hope that their children will get an "edge", or bask in the glory of keeping taxes down - I would guess that few if any on the board have pure reasons for being there.

The ultimate blame should be directed toward Tom Bagley. He has been the financial district that has run everything in the ground.

Has anyone seen the article in the Buffalo News today? West Seneca isn't laying anyone off, and have a $16 million surplus because of sound fiscal planning. Hamburg could have had this too, if the perosn in charge of the money was not so inept.

If you are truly a young teacher in the district, then you should be quaking in your boots. The lay-offs are not over... more are coming next year, and the administration and SB do as they well with the faculty.

Good luck keeping your job, because if staff members with 15+ years of experience have been let go, then younger teachers are in deep trouble.

All Knowing said...

You can take this to the bank..."younger teacher" is a an Admin/BOE fantasy plant.

Someone directed me to this blog because of the bad things that have beed said on it about Joan Calkins. I am a Hamburg resident and have been for going on 60 years. I have known of the success of all of the Calkins family. I do not know Joan, but I know her folks and I know one of her sisters and two of her brothers. The Calkins family is not about themselves. I trust that Joan isn't. As I understand it, she returned to Hamburg to serve the community as an old fashioned pediatrician. I'm sure she could be making tons of money elsewhere but she decided to return to her roots to serve. Last I checked, school board members are not paid. I don't know the motives of any of the other board members, but I am positive that Joan Calkins doesn't have any hidden agendas. School boards are not supposed to be made up of educators. They are to be representatives of the community. I can think of no other family from which I would want a representative than the Calkins family. All of their children went to HHS even though they could have gone to Nichols, Canisius, Nardin, etc. All have thrived.I am reminded of the old phrase "no good deed goes unpunished".

To disgusted: I may end up getting layed off despite being tenured. It would be awful if I was. Older teachers will need to compromise in the next contract to help us younger teachers. I think you may be right that Mr. Gallagher was told do certain things. I think your wrong that he's some kind of wicked liar. Your comparisons between educators and the medical profession make little sense. There are all sorts of people on the Board of Directors of hospitals not just doctors. We have to work together. If we don't like certain members of the school board we should vote them out. We shouldn't attack them personally. We can and should fight them on poor decision making. Respectfully, Concerned (younger) Teacher

Calkins fan, do you know that dr Calkins was made aware of the grade fraud and did nothing. That she participated in slandering teachers. She is not suited for public office. There are charges pending against her w nysed. She may be a fine down on the farm doctor, but she isn't very smart on her feet. She is buying the superintendents bs hook line and sinker. I am sure she ttys her best, but that's not working. She needs to apologize to teachers and in particular the ones that she knows were lied about. And she needs to clean up the grade fraud issue. Then, she maybe considered honorable. Until then, she is nothing more than a windbag.

Anonymous said...

I would agree that Dr. Calkins probably has our school district's best interests at heart. The problem is she needs to get her facts straight before she takes action. Dr. Martin Luther King, said something to this affect.
any job that deals with humanity, has dignity and importance, should be taken with painstaking excellence. To that end even though not financally compensated the school board should take painstaking excellence in there decisions that affect our children and teachers.

Younger teacher- How about this bargaining tool?

Every year the district says it is in tough financial shape. It then threatens layoffs and gets the teachers to accept lower pay each year. After a few years all teachers make Mickey D's wages. Get a clue. Cut admin and tax the rich to fund schools.

find the truth said...

I agree get it right and have it examined by unbiased independant auditors at State Ed. School Board should want the truth not answers given to them by those who changed those grades.

Anonymous said...

They don't want us to know the truth. The truth is too difficult for them to face. A lot of lives ruined just because of their need to cover up the grade changes.

Sherlock Holmes said...

Damn it, my comments are getting rejected by the admin of the blog because they make too much sense

Anonymous said...

Wait a minute, please do not compare your salaries to "mickey d's" wages. I'm sure many of the mcdonalds workers would love to be making your salary. For those of us who have read the previous teacher contract know exactly what those wages are. Remember you are speaking to people of the private sector who work 40+ hours a week, 1 week vacation, no sick days, bringing home extra work, with minimal benefits at best, taking pay cuts this year, being laid off etc. Some are insulted by tenure, again, private sector people get raises when they do a good job, not just because they lived through the summer. I support our teachers and will continue to do so because they are excellent. Comparing their salaries to fast food establishments is not only insulting to the ff establishment, but to the teachers and the parents.

Anonymous said...

Basically speaking, any principal can override any grade given by a teacher. It's in their contract. So, legally speaking, no grade fraud. And because this situation was filled with such drama in the first place, you'll never hear of it because no one can talk about it.

Anonymous said...

The principal can not change an entire group of students grades. Ask the chancellor of state ed. What contract does the principal have? Clearly u are malinformed. MG is classic example of the tale waving the dog. He committed fraud and ought to be sent to the administrative rubber room...basement of administration building filing papers. Why doesn't he change all the kids grades if he has the power. HHS could be ranked number one if everyone go the points he gave to the whiny kids last year. And when he is evaluated on student performance and his pay is tied to it, he can buy the Russo est in boston. Ethics shmethics.

this is a forum for self expression, information and a check and balance on the sb who has conducted our school business behind closed doors. Yes the minutes are now posted on line like other districts, and if it wasn't for the exposure of this issue on this blog it never would have happened. A lot of information from concerned, some are side lined by extrenous comments but basically we are more informed. I respect the main comments from concerned.

As an earlier writer has expressed blogs follow this new guy Acramovitch. I am glad for the info on this site. Sorry that the new supt and sb don't like it. Exposure is tough. I say to those that don't want this info than don't tune in

Nothing to fear nothing to hide, then the school board should have state ed look into this grading issue.

Morality? Between you and mr. Kerr you have about enough morality to fill a thimble. You are an infidel on so many levels. But this usually starts at home. You ought to hang your head in shame.

To Reality Check and others: I am not some kind of stooge for the administration. I heard about the blog and decided to join the debate. That a teacher happens to disagree (somewhat) with the apparent consensus doesn't make me an administrator. I agree that administrators, including the superintendent, make too much money. I just don't think though that we should be trashing him, calkins or the board in a personal manner. Rumor spreading, talking about marriages, and stuff like that is tacky and gets away from the merits of the problem. All of the talk about open meetings does too. The issue is all of us teachers make more than the District can afford. Older teachers and their pay scales could be reduced in order to keep more teachers employed. Respectfully, Concerned (younger) Teacher

“...I just don't think though that we should be trashing him, calkins (sic) or the board in a personal manner. Rumor spreading, talking about marriages, and stuff like that is tacky and gets away from the merits of the problem...” Quote from “younger teacher.”

The decisions a person makes define the underlying character of that individual. You can not separate a person’s action from the nature of the beast.. Achramo manufactured a scenario to illegally dismiss an instructor and Calkins and the RSB sided with him even though evidence was presented that thoroughly refuted their design. Calkins allegedly told a student, in advance, of the intent to get rid of this teacher (the student didn’t know enough to keep her mouth shut). Achramo allegedly engaged in an affair with the teacher wife of another teacher, both of whom he held power over. These are allegations made by persons with first hand knowledge of the events. We are not operating in a vacuum devoid of beings. We are not viewing a flow chart listing pros and cons. We are dealing with individuals who have no compunction about devastating or destroying the lives of others. Therein lies the crux of the issue. Those who would trash others deserve to be subjected to like treatment, their moral fiber scrutinized, the truth revealed. Younger teacher, I continue to define you as intellectually ignorant. You are an unwitting stooge for Achramo and the RSB.

Younger teacher - when you are no longer a "younger teacher" and instead are an "experienced" teacher please make sure to give back 1/3 of yor salary. The point is not that the district can't afford the teachers b/c they make too much, the point is that the district can't afford the teachers b/c someone did not use common sense when planning for the district's economic future. West Seneca teachers make a lot more than Hamburg teachers, have several Title I buildings, AND only have 15 steps - yet they CAN afford their teachers.

NOTICE OF BOCES ANNUAL MEETING

From the public notice that the BOARD OF COOPERATIVE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES OF THE FIRST SUPERVISORY DISTRICT OF ERIE COUNTY (BOCES)will hold annual meeting of the trustees and members of the boards of education of its component school district on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at 7:00 p.m., in Erie 1 BOCES Education Campus.

Donald Ogilvie's salary as publically posted
State salary $ 43,499
BOCES salary $ 123,263
Annualized Benefits(FICA/MED not included) $ 55,268

Total Compensation $222,030.00

Wonder why Governor Cuomo has stated, that these supervisor's salaries are so out of line. In other words over compensated. The Governor's salary is $170,000.

The poor financial management, failure to tax enough, and economic problems the District currently faces were all caused by Osborn and Roswell. West Seneca, Williamsville, etc. ran appropriate tax rates and built up a satisfactory rainy day fund. Osborn and Roswell spent ours down instead of setting proper tax rates. Crawford and the new Superintendent walked into the mess. I'm assuming that's why Crawford left; he was likely misled by the Board back then. Crawford is a very good administrator. I don't know the current Superintendent. (Sent by an administrator at another school in Erie County)

I don't understand the grade fraud issue so it's hard to worry about it. I understand Mike did something or Steve wouldn't have talked openly about it to his peers. But even if I did know what happened, what could I do? Who would trust authority much anyhow?

Anonymous said...

To older teacher: I'm not "for" Achramo. I'm not against teachers. We just settled our old contract and negotiation of the new one will start soon. If there isn't shared sacrifice between the old and young teachers then we'll be seeing more layoffs in the future. We, all of us in the District community, can't afford that as our goal of educating will not be accomplished. Administrators need to share too. A lot. But, they're share of the total is minimal and them taking a cut would be basically just symbolic.
To Klozman: Who was fired illegally?

Young Teacher...I hope when you make it to the top step, you retire or take a pay cut since that's what you are foolishly expecting others to do. I am not on the top step, or anywhere near it yet, but I find your suggestions ridiculous. Especially since the teachers should NOT be responsible for bailing "the powers" out of the financial mess they have gotten themselves into. We already helped out by switching to one insurance provider a few years back. I don't see our grossly overpaid super volunteering to take a pay cut, do you? He's not cutting back on his use of the lawyers, is he? The mismanagement of money in this district needs to stop, and as long as it continues why should the teachers be expected to pay for it? If you truly are a teacher it makes no sense that you would suggest such an asinine "solution."
