Buffalo News Comment

I have been through this story myself. I am happy to say my 21 yr old son after 5 yrs of drug addiction has now been clean for 20 months. We, as parents and family, are not all that lucky! There are alot of fingers to be pointed. I for one am glad So Erie in Hamburg is closed. Due to insurance regulations, my son attended So Erie for 2 yrs. He was happy to go. It was the easiest place for him to obtain his drugs than having to 'shop' on the street. I spent $105 / wk for 2 yr at So Erie and they never followed their own rules. How about 'frequent' probation visits and surprise testing?!? The surprise is, when you meet with a probation officer they tell you exactly what days you will be surprised with testing. The system doesn't work, but I think if we keep throwing money at it, that should fix it. I have no more respect for Renaissance House than I do Southern Erie. When I contacted them for help, I was told there was none available. And so the story goes! Let your child literally sleep on the snowy cold mud for 3 weeks until you drag them into ECMC to sit for 12 hours of withdrawal only to be told your case is not critical enough. They can't stand the pain any longer and out the door they go to use again.

This is painful. Everyone in this village knows someone who has suffered a love one addicted to drugs. God Bless your son and you.

Have to start young, set a good example and continue the conversation right through graduation and beyond. Come on school district this is where it begins, (Kids escaping drugs).
Thank you, Concerned

Parents don't think you can hide your drug use from your kids. Kids find out everything, you certainly don't want them to model this bad scene.

I know your story all too well. Thanks for sharing your story and thanks concerned for keeping this serious issue alive. schools need to do more and soon.

UB to study new modes of addiction therapy and join the national movement to change the way doctors get trained to handle patients with addictions. UB to start the first accredited residency training programs in addiction medicine. Physicians after completing primary residency, during which they learn a specialty, can then choose to spend a year studying how to recognize addiction and tx addiction.
Currently, only one medical specialty Psychiatry offers additional specialized training and certificiation in addiction tx.

Our Hamburg School Administrators and School Board President Dr. Joan Calkins are letting our young people down by not providing our kids with the health lessons needed on addiction.

Buffalo,NY (WBEN) As teen drug abuse continues to rise, three Western New York southtowns are fighting back. After a number of drug-related incidents and deaths, the communities of Elma, Marilla and Wales are tackling the issue head-on with town hall meeting.

Colleen Edwards, a social worker at Iroquois High School in Elma, tells WBEN drug overdose is now the number one cause of death amount young adults; surpassing auto accidents for the first time since 1979.

The rise in drug abuse coincides with a surge in abuse of prescription pain medicine. She says easy access to parents' and grandparents' medicine cabinets is the problem.

"This is not an Iroquois Central problem," said Edwards. "This is a nationwide problem. Iroquois has decided to tackle this issue head-on rather than bury their heads in the sand."

Edwards describes Town Hall meeting as "interactive".

Speakers included a former addict, school officials, police and a mother who lost her son a year ago to an overdose. There was questions and answers as well.

The "It takes a Community to Save a Life".

Hamburg needs to take a pae from Iroquois book. Parents and PTA Members

Problem, the Doctors are too free with their prescription pads. Pediatricians need to give careful thought as to what addictive drugs they are prescribing to their young patients. Get back to the basics not the prescription pad.

Painkiller overdose deaths soar.

The Number of overdose deaths form powerful painkillers more than tripled over a decade, the government reported. A trend the U.S. health official called an epidemic but one that can be stopped.

Presciption painkillers such as OxyContin, Vicodin and methadone led to the deaths of almost 15,000 people including actor Heath Ledger.

5% of Americans ages 12 and older said they have abused painkillers in the past year-using them without a prescription or just to get high.

Parents get rid of unneeded or expired painkillers so they aren't misused.

My kids went to dr calkins, she wrote scripts. They became zombies. Finally my husband and I went homeopathic. Calkins loves to write scripts. She is wined and dined by the pharma companies. She is on the board only to get new patience. I am a good mom who asked questions. Get the kids off of drugs.

School District needs to do anything. At least something is better than the nothing that is done now. Parent

Theres a need for a zero tolerance policy in the HS. The new york State law says that a first time violation of pot possession is only a violation and get an acd. School can suspend anyway. School has to catch sellers. Its expensive to have police present.

Drug ed is a waste of time. Schools have been doing it since Nancy Reagan startf with Just Say No which didnt work either. Schools need to have security present.

OP breathalized rowdy students at the football game and suspended about 20 kids for a week.

Too late for our family, but not for others, agree get the message out to our kids and school and home is where it begins not when it is over. When we feel better about this we will write more.
Keep this message alive

The good morning AP math calculus is very successful. Yes the kids get high grades 4 &5 but does that make these outburst ok? THe question is would other teachers get away with the same behavior? (probably not.) Like everything in this district selectively enforces.

Penn State turned its back on a serious matter, why? Because the football program brought in millions to the school.

One year of bullying ignored at Boston Valley what did the school district do? Protect the teacher because her dad is former school board member. Why did the Teacher Principal, Supt. Steve Achramovitch and Scool Board President do. Nothing.

It depends who you know or who you are connected to in this district. Just remember as Dr. Calkins cuts our kids programs she ran an AP French class for her daughter with only 4 in the class. SAD

We care about healthy lunches but we need to address this drug problem also Dr. Calkins. We need to treat the whole child not just parts. Thank you.

To our V. Pres. Peg D. ,your agreement with the district gives the green light to target us teachers. Forget our tenure track it is out the window as of the other night. Too bad Jon & Peg let us all down. Stupid move trusting Steve Achramovitch and Joan Calkins.

Achramovitch is making a list of teachers he doesn't like, just watch. Better kiss Dr. Calkins and Steve Achramovitch A**.

Watch the abuse to follow. Duped on this one Union (Lack of )Leadership.

Penn State = Hamburg's cover up for a former school board members daughter a teacher. Achramovitch knew so did Calkins, minimized this severe year long bullying at BV.

Dereliction of duties Steve Achramovitch.

Hey Steve you need to go back to your old employer Fantasy Island. We knew you back then still haven't changed your self serving ways. A bull shitter and incompetent to the core.

Selectively Enforced - Since Dr. Calkins was elected to the school board, she hasn't had a child in the HS, so your information about her saving an AP French class that her daughter was in is completely false. Get your facts straight.

Bullying at Boston Valley:

I have a hard time understanding how high-level officials (SB Pres & Supt.) apparently thought a former SB members daughter position as a teacher was more important than protecting a child. It is befuddling to us in this school system.

Achramovitich has fractured his family and others by his own calculating actions.

The other part of Hamburg Central School System awful equation is instiutional self-interest. School officials took a glance at the drug problem - like the easier road. It wants to spare the image of a drug free school system. Stop and See this curse for what it is. It is killing our children and you ignore this. Shame on the school officials.

WARNING;

When our childrens peditrician prescribes ADDERALL OR ADDERALL XR get a second opinion. First of all a ped. is a childs general practioner not a medical doctor specializing in mental health. These two drugs have a high potential for abuse; avoid prolonged use. Misuse of amphetamine may cause sudden death and serious cardiovascular adverse events.

When our children are prescribed such meds we as parents must take charge of them. They will develop new found friends often drug abusers who crave this drug. Problem kids will crush and snort this drug which could prove deadly.

Parents count your pills, lock them up and administer to your child and watch him/her swallow the drug. Remember when Johnny or Suzie says that the pharmacy has counted their medication wrong they are lying. The pharmacy triple counts medication.
