Packing the Board of Education
In 1937, F. D. Roosevelt attempted an initiative to add members to the Supreme Court so to advance a favoritism toward his failing New Deal policies. The Constitution does not provide for a set number of Justices (Article III), and the number has fluctuated over our shared history. Roosevelt's attempt to extend the arm of the Executive body on the the independent judiciary has lead to the sour and unfavorable term applied to Roosevelt's actions, "the court packing plan".
I am reminded of this lesson of history as it was revealed to me over the weekend, that the superintendent, an employee of the Board of Education, has attempted his own packing plan. It was revealed to me at a local coffee shop that the Hamburg Superintendent has contacted members of the community to interview for a "BORED" seat.
Members of the secretive "ambassadors" group have been approached and have thrown their hats in the ring. We have learned that there are atleast 6 people who have applied. We are told the Hamburg Teacher Union has a parent, former PTA and village employee looking to fill the spot vacated by the departure of Dr. Harper. Of course, the teachers union was burnt badly by Harper, she did nothing to advance position of the teachers, and in many instances voted against teacher friendly propositions.
So Hamburg, are you going to let the district superintendent choose his own boss, and in essence his own future and salary by packing the bench? Or, will you attend the BOE meetings this week and speak up.
Hamburg do not be fooled by the two or more former BOE members who are going to be interview. For it was under these fools that $1.8 million dollars went missing and the buildings you are paying for crumbled into disrepair.
Attend the meetings scheduled for Tuesday 10-4-11 at 6 p.m., and Thursday 10-6-11 at 6 p.m., and insist your voice be heard. They must open these interviews to public comment.
Stop the packing of the BOE.
