It wasn't always like this....just since the latest principal. Guidance department doesn't help...some of them tell kids to drop out.

Not a Hamburg Teacher said...

I'm interested to know what happened w/ the other 13%. did they drop out or did they fail a class and do summer school, graduating in the summer. (which I believe means they are not counted in the number.)I agree that the direction we are headed as a disctrict is not good and the good citizens of Hamburg need to start stepping up. My kids deserve the same fair and equal access that the students who came before them received.

The Guidance Department and President of the HTA John Mrozek told Parents and students in January of 2011 at a freshmen orientation that the system is set up for you to fail, in fact its expected you can fail and still graduate. I’m sorry this e is just wrong. I understand that students can feel overwhelmed, but to tell them it’s expected or that its ok to fail is not what I would call good Guidance.

We live in a small community this is pathetic. Clean house at the high school who is being held accountable. Joan has done such a good job as school board president. Maybe we should get someone on the board who has a clue about education and fix this problem. That graduation rate is disgusting go ahead school board cut more teachers. Lets strive to have our graduation rate be 80 %

Thank you for this information
I know for a fact that HS guidance will tell your son or daughter to quit. If you are not one of the important families or part of the UNDERGROUND ,guidance will not put any effort into your kid to keep them in hs. The only guidance was to tell them they better quit high school. This happened to my best friends son a few years ago, and he regrets this everyday. This statistic is shameful

Maybe the principal should just make up the grades. Didn't the grade fraud happen in the class of 2010? So, after the principal made up grades for the smart kids, he didn't do the same for the kids who werent passing. There needs to be an investigation of grade fraud at the high school. Gallagher should be sent to a rubber room.

I agree that some people on the board who have some type of background in business and some that have some background in business. This does not have tgo a long wayo be any formal educational training, but little common sense would go a long way. We also need people who are enegetic and creative problem solvers. WE are no longer facing a crisis, but rather this is the new norm. We mut refocus how we operate and prioritize. We must remember that at the end of the day all students deserve fair and equal access to a quality education.

I'm suprised that someone hasn't started a CHARTER SCHOOL here yet.

These numbers are unexceptable and our school ranking is very poor.

The math was simple, we need to focus on the whole kid. Our core is cut to the core. Electives need to be examined. The music dept.staff has exploded in the past 15 years.

We also lost our marching band.

Mark Crawford and Joan calkins are to blame. Calkins is running this district into the ground....we will be ranked with Lackawanna if we keep going. And remember, this is the graduation rate with a *50 policy. This means kids can't get below a 50 even if they do not come to school or sit and do nothing in class. Yep, they are all starting out with a 50, so all they need to do is get 15 points each quarter. Scary the graduation rate has gone down since Crawford started * 50. Concerned, write a post on * 50. Crawford damaged hamburg and now joan is letting Steve continue down that path. Wait til people start moving to orchard park or east aurora. Shame on you Joan calkins.

I meant ti say people w/ an educational and business background earlier.

I disgaree about the statement regarding Dr. Crawford. I cureently am employed in West Seneca and he has shown nothing to indicate that he has anything but the best of intentions for the children and adults in the district. He met with the ENTIRE staff, school by school to lay it all on the line, speak about preserving human resources, and allowed feedback from the faculty on concerns and suggetions. I believe he walked into an already bad situation here.

As for charter schools, that's not necessarily the answer. Yes they would not be under the districts regulation, but it diverts money that is already stretched thin. I believe that Hamburg has the resources (parents, students, and teachers) necessary to excel. Its the leadership that has to get with the program.

Perhaps the BOE needs to reflect on why they chose to serve and what they can and are willing to offer the community. It shouldn't be about having power and proving popularity.

Former administrator 14075 said...

Currently employed in West Seneca. Crawford has you fooled. He is a phoney. Why did he run out of hamburg? On the way out the door he wrecked teachers lives, and then lied under Oath. Yes, not telling the truth when under oath is lying and perjury....he did this and is a man with no moral fabric. He and the former assistant superintendent Kerr are diabolical, ask the staff on abbott road.

Crawford certainly has you fooled.

I will concede that I am not "in the know" about what occurred in Hamburg. Perhaps he is a liar or perhaps he's changed his ways. I do give him the benefit of the doubt because I need to focus on what's best for my students, and I can't do that if I believe that my super is out to get me. However in WS we do have a business manager that makes 13 year financial projections every year. I have a union that gets out into the community, interviews BOE candidates, and calls citizens at voting time. It really must stink to work in an environment where you are not appreciated or valued. My kids are stuck being educated in such a system. We can blame Dr. Crawford. We can blame Dr. Caulkens. We can blame, blame, blame. The bottom line is we should blame ourselves. As a community we are being complacent. We elect these people. We pay these admistrators' salaries. Its easy to complain, but people need to step up. I would if I could, but a conflict of interest prevents me. I will support and work hard for anyone willing to put there words to work. Loss of programing is jeapordizing our kids' future. GT programs don't just help the smart, they allow the teachers focus on some other needs in the classroom. Where's the rigor?

Anonymous said...

WS staff....conflict of interest????? Stand up for what you believe in. We had a person who stood up and represented us, and the very members of the union crucified the lady. Hamburg teachers are now run by incompetents who have no idea what they are doing.

Not a Hamburg Teacher said...

I meant I cannot myself run for school board b/c of a conflict of interest. I will stand up. I am not a native hamburger. I am still new to the area and don't know a lot of people. I have been pleading on this site for people to come together. I will make phone calls, signs, stump, visit PTA meetings, SB meetings, whatever needs to be done to help someone qualified get elected. That doesn't mean hard choices won't have to be made. Choices that will initially tick people off. The reality is that our population is decreasing and the taxpayers are revolting. Voters are allowing a small group of people to make important choices for them. Which amazes me b/c most of us are appaled at the thought of govenment telling us anything. Its easy to hide on a blog.

I agree your HTA is a MESS. Again those running for office there need to reflect on their reasons and the membership must make informed choices.

So who out there is willing to step up. I am so disgusted the whole district I'm ready to pay tution and bring my kiddos w/ me.

To not a Hamburg Teacher,

thank you for your comments
. Our Union interview candidates and get behind them, are you kidding? They don't have a clue. We need pro education and pro teacher candidates. We are so far away from reality that is why we are crapped on so badly by this administration. We have a rouge group (teachers in Armor elementary) that is in the administrations pocket along with the former male president of the Union. He did nothing for us. He made a nice bed for himself at the expense of our Union membership. We need to exert our Union muscle and support candidates that respect us and what we do for our students. We can make the change necessary here. Patty Brunner Collins is in this for popularity contest, doesn't have a clue. Dr. Calkins sucked in by this Supt. so far that it is sickening.

Members of a secret society called the ambassadors group. One member has a daughter in admin and his wife working pt in the district. What a conflict here.

Adminsitration asking for a freeze in everyones wages but their own. They are expected to give themselves a 2.5% raise. Can you imagine what 2.5%5 is on $180,000.00. Would it ever occur to them to lead by example? Absolutely not. This is only for starters.
Oh I forgot to memtion how dishonest the Supt.is. It has been reported by his two former districts where Achramovitch has served as Supt. In Greece and Ken Ton. that "he will lie to you even though he knows that you know that he is lying". Sick Bunch, and you wonder why only 87%?

The superintendent said at the budget session on march 6' he wants to cut saturday detention at the high school. Two treachers cover the three hours of detention. The total cost is $216.00 dollars per Saturday. There are 11 saturday detentions left this year. That's a total of $2376.00 for the Saturday detentions. The superintendents cellphone bill that the distinct pays forays gas that the district pays for is a bigger savings than cutting detention. Why doesn't he take a pay cut. Greg Davis has been milking the system for far too long....cut their salaries. It seems the only solution steve can come up with is cutting teachers and programs. Look in the mirror Steve, cut your own out of control salary.

Her blog exploded into a national situation. Customers were pulling their money out of Bank of America and opening up accounds in credit unions and small banks.

What does this tell you. Yes the internet is here. But most importantly, when you are IGNORED as with this school district there is an avenue to get your message out in a much bigger way.

Malodorous Emanations from the Fundament

To quote the duplicitous Achramo: “Our new Energy Education program has realized $28,000 in utility savings in its first four months...” Let’s calculate the contract fees: $8700 per month x four = $34,800; four month cost for software - $739.00; four month cost for Energy Education Specialist (Scapegoat) - $6,000; cost to send Energy Specialist (Scapegoat) to National Training Conference – est $1,000 (that figure is probably low). These figures total $42,539. It appears that rather than saving $28,000, this particular folly of Achrundament is $14,539 in the red.

Considering the fact that natural gas prices are at their lowest level in a decade and seasonal average temperatures have been running five degrees above normal, Achrundament’s savings figure is merely voodoo economics. Without even taking into account the Energy Program, the figure of $28,000 is meaningless without factoring in the savings that were generated solely by those two phenomena. Welcome to the Achramo's master manipulation menagerie.

Good thing her ran out of town, because he should've been fired for his lies and how he attacked the staff. Crawford let him do it and then he ran out. Wait til the district is done cleaning up the kerr and Crawford mess, the district will be in the hole millions in legal fees.

Sorry Joan he was shagging another administrator his subordinate a married lady and he himself with a wife and 3 kids. Made up stories about alot of people. As far as I'm concerned he was no man of God. He was a shameful creep who we paid to carry on at the Administration building. Not discrete enough, got busted the two of them. Now she is being promoted. Sick Sick Sick

Klozman, you are right on the money. I couldn't believe the spin that Achramo put on his snake oil contract with ENERGY EDUCATION in the Focus. He thinks everyone is stupid. I am ashamed of this failure of a school system. 87% is not acceptable. I was shocked and so is everyone we talk to, we always thought that we had a 98% graduation rate.

Hamburg was once, and not to long ago a top 5 school in the area. We were well respected. We were able to get into the top flight schools. We received significant financial scholarships.

Today we are so far out of that league and likely not to be back there anytime soon.

How many kids are in kindergarten??? It's simple Steve, have one of the five year olds in the class count them. The kids can count to 24, why can't you?

In this week's sun, the super mentions that the admistrators are taking a "pay freeze", but nothing is final until the teachers decide if they will except concessions. Once again this is put on the backs of the teachers. I realize that some downsizing may have to happen b/c of population loss. But a wage freeze for people making well over 100K doesn't do anything but keep the staus quo. How about a pay cut? Hard choices need to be made. There is no reason we the taxpayers should be paying our administrators that much money when we are expected deal with the loss of programing and increased class size. There is no reason why you can't live a comfortable life here on around a 100K salary. They my fire back, well we have all of this responisibility that warrants the salary. Don't we ask the same thing of the teachers as we increase their work load and take away their resources? A pay cut would save a few teachers. Hard choices. Education is rewarding, but its not a career you should ever going into expecting to be financially wealthy.

If this was one of the fortunate few that parents have influnece this wouldn't happen.(underground that has been referred to.)

We are an ordinary family and deserve the same as those that are part of the underground.

What is important here is that we may be not so important to them, but as the girl who took to the internet with her beef against BANK OF AM. we will go as public as possible to the web to expose the schools lack of interest in my children. Why because my kids are as important to me and society as the kids of influence. God help us I am sick of being ignored.

Let us get this straight. We can safely say more than 1 in 10 do not graduate.

Need a complete over haul. Are these administrators, principals and guidance counselors just collecting a big fat pay check with no accountability?

It appears so.

Pleasant Ave. said...

For improvement in any organization, it starts with the leadership. There will never be an improvement unless the leadership is changed. Guidance more accountable. Building Principal more accountable, Administration and School Board more accountable. We need someone with education experience who isn't affraid or too timid to challenge the establishment. Thank you Holly Balaya for starting somewhat of a dialogue. Holly needs help on this board the old guard is resistant and failing. My kid is entering the freshman class next year and this freightens me. "System set up for our kids to fail" is a poor message to our community. 87% they are failing.

Not A Hamburg Teacher said...

I apologize if I misspoke. I wasn't basing my statement on what the super said, but rather the fact that population is down across WNY. (Just look at the census) I know in my own district there are 100 fewer kindergarteners than seniors. This is significant, espcially in the middle school where 100 kids is a team for us. We know this b/c our budget manager makes those predictions, forcasting 13 years into the future. (the entire journey a student will take starting in K)

I think a good comparison would be with a school district that has a similar demographic and similar socioeconomic climate. The first one that comes to mind is Frontier Central, just a few miles away. Did anyone check their graduation rate? I did, its 84%. They must have the same lousy school board and administrators with members who cheat on their spouses, change grades illegally, and have secret meetings.
When you decide to start actually caring about students and not your petty little personal issues, then maybe you will see that the problems that suburban school districts are facing are bigger than your little soap opera here. The issues that are currently eroding the City of Buffalo School District are creeping into schools like Hamburg and Frontier, low attendance, less parental involvement, drug problems, etc.
Everyday you spend whining about your petty issues is a day that you have failed the students of Hamburg Schools. Instead of complaining to the school, complain to the parents who arent doing their jobs. Complain to the parents who are not sending their kids to school more than 90% of the time, to the parents who are not checking to make sure their kids are studying and doing homework, to the parents who do not attend open house or parent/ teacher conferences, and to the parents who have no idea where their kids are on school nights or the weekends. If your child does not graduate from high school, guess what, it is your fault. Graduating high school is not that hard. I would bet that some of the people complaining on this blog are some of these parents I am talking about.
THis blog is just like the rest of this country....a bunch of people wanting to blame everyone else.

How about a school board that gives parents the right to take their kids out of school to go on vacation, I guess parents can't find a vacation during the other 180!days during the year that the kids aren't in school. Or blame the boe for the minimum of a grade 50. This makes sense. Don't come to school but get a 50 anyhow. I'd love not to go to work and get paid for half a days work. This board of education has made a mockery of school. A joke. And the kids know all about the joke. Hamburg is not frontier, and if they want to be like frontier perhaps the districts should merge. Get rid of the heavy cost of administration for two districts. Joan calkins is a joke. She bends over with anything Crawford and achramo recommend, does she have an original thought in her head?????? Get rid of Joan and find a thoughtful person for the boe.

To anony. 11:28 pm 3/11/12;

I agree somewhat. Are we to accept 87%? I hope not. What is Orchard Park, East Aurora, Eden and Irquois doing better than us? Hamburg should be looking at these differences. We can no longer sit back and say that this is ok. Eden and Aurora are not well off districts financially.
We need to look at some serious changes here. This board is only interested with $$$. We need structural changes. Not just handing out grades to Juniors and Seniors so that they graduate. We need to find out what the problem is with the 13% that fails.

Drugs is a big problem. Maybe we can start by reinforcing more programs, assemblys with the stories of those who have battled drugs and who are drug free now. Let these kids know that some drugs ruin them physically and mentally for life. Show them pictures of individuals before crack and a few years into the crack and how they are almost unrecognizable of their old self.

We cannot give up on our children no matter what. Iroquois had a community forum that is on this blog and the school and community identified that their school district had a serious problem with drugs. The district said that they" could no longer put their head in the sand". Opened themselves up in the Town Hall with families who have lost loved ones to drugs and students who have overcome their addictions. It said to the kids we are here to help you.

We cannot force parents, but we can identify those who will need the extra help and offer it to them in the school setting.

This school system is here for only a fraction of a day in a kids life. So lets make the best of it regardless of their home setting. Yes parents need to be more responsible, but lets face it some will never be, so lets give them as much help as possible to succeed.

responsibility said...

How about a 17 or 18 year old accepting some responsibility for their own actions. 18 year olds vote and can serve in the United States Military and die for their Country. Personal responsiblity is an important lesson. If you make yourself out to be the victim you will become a victim, and will never be successful.

It's your ball said...

Healthy menus and interactive Victory Gardens are wonderful for our kids. What happens in High School that we get them this far and we fail them. Most of our kids have come through the entire system. We can identify some early on who will have problems and others fall through the cracks. I agree that drugs and lack of parental effort are a large factor. Iroquois has a drug problem but has managed to have a 97% graduation rate. We need to look at other models and I mean outside the box. Look at the Europeans. They are ahead of the United States in every category.

School Board this is your job to think outside the box and make the necessary changes for us to improve by at least 8 to 10%.

Yes, that's right: 3/20 at 6:30 p.m. The exact date and time that so many truly involved and dedicated parents will be attending the middle school's Family Food and Fitness Fair. Don't even begin to think that this is an oversight. With supportive parents safely tucked away at the middle school and the uninvolved at home, who is left to attend the budget meeting? Exactly the one's that the board wants to attend.
