Dr. Joan "Dolittle" Calkins . . .

Please vote in the poll on the left hand side of your screen.*
*Should Dr. Joan "Dolittle" Calkins run for a second term on the Hamburg Board of Education?

Before you vote, please ask yourself just a few simple questions:
  1. Are the children of Hamburg in a better educational place than they were 3 years ago, when Dr. Dolittle started her term on the Board? [Graduation Rates]; [Rankings Commentary]
  2. How many teachers, staff and programs have been eliminated under the watch of Dr. Calkins?
  3. Are you pleased that the Hamburg Central Schools Health Department has been decimated under the Calkins' Board of Education? [Life Skills]
  4. Do you know that at the end of the 2011-12 school year, Hamburg Schools under watch of Dr. Calkins' will have shaved 5 science teachers from the ranks?
  5. Does Dr. Calkins' know that the future of Western New York is in health and sciences?
  6. Does Dr. Calkins' realize that under her watch Hamburg has cut health and science at the very same time that the State of New York has allocated $1 billion to WNY for health and science investment? Hamburg students will be left out of this regional economic opportunity, because Hamburg will not have the teachers to prepare the students for careers in health and science.
  7. Do you think the Hamburg taxpayers should spend money on expensive Energy Consultants? [Energy Education]; [Energy Education or NYSERDA]
  8. Are you pleased with the process that was used to chose the Superintendent?
  9. Are you pleased with the performance of your Superintendent? [Concerned's 14 Points]
  10. What has Dr. Calkins done to reign in exceedingly high administrative salaries? [Administrative Salaries]
  11. What has Dr. Calkins done to address the drug problem? [Wake up Hamburg High School][Lakeshore takes the Drug Problem Seriously]; [Iroquois Takes Action]
  12. Did you know that Dr. Calkins' slipped into the District the use of her sister Lucy Calkins' Writers Workshop without any discussion on the Board of Education nor any preview of other writing programs?
  13. How much has the District spent in legal bills, because the Board of Education under Dr. Calkins' watch did not follow Federal and State laws?  Despite the violations of Open Meeting Laws, Dr. Calkins' written statement defending the District's illegal practices is still featured on the District's webpage.  Dr. Dolittle knew the District violated Open Meetings Laws yet was too arrogant to acknowledge the intentional errors. [Not so Far Away]
  14. Is this the kind of character Hamburg Schools desires in a Board Member?
  15. How much bad PR has Hamburg been exposed to under the watch of Dr. Calkins?
  16. Is Dr. Calkins doing what is in the best interest of your children, your community and your property value?  Remember, Dr. Crawford ran out of Hamburg under the watch of Dr. Joan Calkins.
  17. Is Hamburg all it can be under the Calkins' Board of Education?
Just a few things to chew on before you cast your vote in this poll.

Excellent post,

destruction of our kids schools. Leadership a joke.

Dr. Calking needs to shut Dils up. I have a feeling Dils' last mistep is going to end up costing the district in the seven figure range. Can we afford this. Dils and Calking should step down.

According the agenda for the April 17 2012 BOE meeting, there will be a vote to suspend the Life Skills graduation requirement. SHAME ON YOU DR. CALKINS!!!! WHAT ABOUT THE FINANCE REQUIREMENT THAT THE BOE VOTED TO ADOPT IN 2010. ACCORDING TO THE BOE BRIEFS ON LINE AT THE JULY 6, 2010, Dr. Calkins and the BOE WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS A FINANCE COMPONENT OF THE THE ECONOMICS REQUIREMENT. THE BOE IGNORED THE PUBLIC COMMENT AND WENT DOWN THE MERRY PATH OF ADDING FINANCE AS A REQUIREMENT TO GRADUATE. JOAN WAKE UP!!!!!! LIFE SKILLS AND ECONOMICS BOTH COVER OFF ON WHAT KIDS ARE LEARNING IN FINANCE. PERHAPS, DR. CALKINS YOU SHOULD SIT IN ON LIFE SKILLS OR ECONOMICS, BEFORE YOU MAKE ANOTHER DUMB DECISION. PERHAPS THE BOE SHOULD GET RID OF KEYBOARDING!!!! HOW DOES THAT SOUND? KIDS KNOW HOW TO TYPE ON A COMPUTER BY AGE 5.
CALKINS IGNORS THE PUBLIC, and SHIVERS AT PUBLIC DISCUSSION. SHE MUST GO!!! MR. MADDEN IS ON THE FINANCE BOARD...HE SHOULD NOT VOTE. CONFLICT OF INTEREST.

What is the homework policy in Hamburg? We are looking to buy a house in Hamburg, and we are trying to decide if our kids should go to Orchard Park or Hamburg, that will determine where we buy a lot??? I cam across this blog, and there is some scary stuff on there about the district. I looked at Orchard Parks webpage and it seem much more thorough. I want to know about Homework? Check out Orchard Parks Policy http://www.opschools.org/about.cfm?subpage=66. We are coming from the City of Buffalo and want the best education for our children. Can anyone help with this question??? Or gives so practical advice?

Ramona, Orchard Park is generally viewed as having a better district at this time. While I of course only had an experience at Hamburg High School I rarely (if never) found people that argued Hamburg was unequivocally better than OPS.

On the hamburg website it's reads that finance academy has tips for managing your money, and upon clicking on the link one is directed to a PowerPoint of kids talking about why they love finance academy....because its fun. Yep, fun!!!!! Looks like they are having fun and not learning much. Check out the video and ask what the heck these kids are doing of any substance, dr. Calkins check it out yourself. Looks like a lot of trips. And there are no tips on managing money. Misleading. Save life skills

#11 WHAT HAS DR. CALKINS DONE REGARDING THE DRUG PROBLEMS IN OUR SCHOOLS? answer nothing, absolutely nothing. We just lost another Hamburg alum to a drug over dose. Our children need to be taught early as to the dangers of illegal drugs. WHEN DOES RECREATIONAL USE BECOME AN ADDICTION? This is what is going on with our young children recreational use of drugs. LIFE SKILLS IS JUST THAT skills and knowledge that you have for life. Dr. Clakins, Patty Brunner Collins and the veteran members of this school board are letting our children down by not giving them the tools needed for life. This is why our school graduation rate is so poor.

Maybe life skills would have helped Patty Brunner Collins.

Ramona,

Orchard Park is a better school system, just look at their graduation rates 97% compared to Hamburg's 87%. Give that some thought before sending you children here.

Do you fools realize that there is a direct relationship between a district's graduation rate and the socioeconomic base of that district? Just look at the graduation rates of a district compared to the percentage of free and reduced lunches offered. Stop pretending that O.P. is a better school because they have a better school board. Stop blaming the school board, it makes you all look ignorant.

Anonymous 2:55 the school board is ignorant. They are dummies that sit there and buy the lies for the superintendent. Joan calkins and patty Bruner and Matt dills wrecked this district. They should be in jail.

Who are the candidates for the BOE?

The West Seneca teachers and administrators would like to send Crawford back to Hamburg. Whoever "ran him out" of the district did us all a big favor! He is incompetent.

Leadership a joke said...

The socioeconomics of Eden, East Aurora and Iroquois school distircts are on par with Hamburg and their graduation rates are Eden 96%, East Aurora 98%, and Iroquois 97% HAMBURG 87%. Yes you blame the leadership or lack of it. Get a grip this is pathetic.

get your facts straight

the order is correct except Laura Heater is #4 on the ballot and there are eight people total running.

Looks like the community is sending the board a message with eight people running.

Sure a message is being sent, SS is trying to take over the BOE majority. Good thing her daughter had a different last name in the last election. How many has SS roped into running this time? Will she cry again when the results are posted and she is in dead last? Boo Hoo SS.

candidate other than Sally said...

I'm sure Sally never cried the first time. We should be happy to have this large field of candidates. Why not, this is a Democracy.

Kudos to all the candidates.
