Elementary and Middle School Rankings

The top 100 Elementary Schools in the 8 counties of Western New York

#16    Charlotte Ave *
#47    Armor Elementary
#63    Union Pleasant Elementary (up 1 spot over last year's rankings. well done)
#132  Boston Valley Elementary (not in top one hundred)

Rankings of Hamburg Middle, Frontier Middle and Orchard Park Middle

On a ranking of 100 middle schools,

#22  Orchard Park Middle
#33  Frontier Middle
#44  Hamburg Middle

* Charlotte Avenue was once the jewel in the crown of Hamburg Schools. What has happened to Charlotte Ave?

Should these rankings be of concern to the parents and taxpayers of Hamburg?  It seems that if a family when given a choice would naturally move into the Frontier or Orchard Park School District.  This decision is as simple as deciding which side of the road to live on in some neighborhoods.
Perhaps a more detailed study should include data on how Hamburg Schools match up to our neighboring districts in class sizes, staff reductions in the last 2 years, teacher pay, and then compare that data to the pay of the superintendents.

Of the adjacent districts, Orchard Park and Frontier, Hamburg's superintendent is ranked #1 in total compensation, while the teachers of Hamburg Central Schools are ranked #74.

The ineptitude of the Hamburg Teachers' Association is clearly an issue as well.

Concerned opines, that even more so than financial compensation, teachers and staff have been beaten down in Hamburg.  This dysfunctional climate starts at the top of the School Board and is executed by the Superintendent of Schools and has in effect poisoned the district and has clearly taken a toll on the children of Hamburg.

Boston Valley's ranking is 149 - 132 was last year's ranking. All elementary schools and the middle school have dropped in ranking with the exception of Union Pleasant.

I believe as an educator that the rankings are a result of the climate established by those in charge. For example, if you are requiring teachers to teach 6 classes, with 2 - 3 preps you are not going to get a focused teacher. Having teachers juggle several eggs may save money, but will cause students to get the short end of the stick. It drives me crazy that people who haven't been in a clasroom in years, or may never have had a real classroom are making decisions without consulting the troops on the front lines. If you keep treating your teachers like crap you are going to create a climate of indifference. It is time for those in charge to really re-evalaute why they are doing what they are doing.

Business First ranking is directly related to poverty levels rather than superior climate!

I would like to thank school Board Member Holly Balaya. I was so proud as a taxpayer and a parent that she voted NO tonight when another round of teachers and clerk’s where cut . I applauded her for asking what is the plan why are we making these cut when we have no plan on how we are going to teach these kid. Its nice to know that someone on the school board has some balls to vote NO on something that is not right Thank you Holly

Did Diane Reynolds speak tonight? She made a snide remark about legal fees....perhaps she needs to be reminded of the audio tape that is on YouTube of the Board meeting in which she, Dils, Collins and Dumb shit Joan lie. Hang on to your hat Diane....the storm is only picking up. You are a waste of time and space and need to get a grip. Nothing will be very pleasant for you Diane, you are a waste of a seat on the BOE.

What are we to do next start laying off the students?

Oh yes we heard Sally rip him a new ass hole. I agree she is right morale at an all time low. His stick is to divide and conquer us, but what he doesn't realize is that we are united and will unite to turn Calkins, Dils and Reynolds out next year. Yes we asked to start cutting in administration and again he hurts the kids. Achramovitch is hated here.

Thank you Holly for wanting answers. Cutting teachers, programs, destroying our schools, without a plan. His answer more study halls. wonder why our school rankings are falling. Holly is the only one who cares about our educational system. Holly we love you keep up the good work, you have much more support than you realize. A big thank you. UPES MOM

We will crank it up next Spring. Really ramp it up. We have been slapped in the face, our kids are being kicked to the curb by this school board, (Not Holly Balaya). Holly you are great. My fellow teachers and my kids need more like you on the sb. Laura glad to hear that you are not soured by that bitch Joan who started her rumor mill against you. Laura we will be supporting you and at least one other candidate. 3 would be great. Holly and Sally need help, this present group will destroy what is good about Hamburg. We love you Laura.

Harris Beach the law firm for Hamburg Schools is paying staff to watch and read this blog. Good use of tax payer dollars. buffalo news needs to run a story on these overpaid lawyers sucking the money out of my kids crayon box.

Anonymous said...

IO missed last night's meeting b/c I needed to correct my own exams. They are laying off more teachers? Right now they are over extending the teachers they do have.

Anonymous said...

Harris Beach was at Steves appointment in December of 2010, perhaps Marnie Smiths who was introduced to our community by Sally last night was there too. If Steve knew what he was doing he wouldnt bring back up. He used Harris Beach at Greece too, and there are all kinds of issues in Greeece with Steve and lawyers. Just sayin. Millions have been spent...FOIL REQUEST THE INFO FROM GREECE AND HAMBURG.

Joan and Diane, Get a grip...learn the difference between a lawsuit and a grievance. And remember, you are on the BOE that brought the Order to Show Cause against private citizens..how much did that cost? Joan how does it feel to get boo'd by staff. You will go down in history as possible the worst BOE President or perhaps in second place behind Osbourne. Congrats...you are in the top ten! And, if Kelly Harper didnt give in to your bullying you too would have gotten a glass apple last night. Give it up Joanie...that revolution is only starting.

Obey the laws and you wouldn't have problems. Steve has a hx of abusing other people's money, your tax dollars. In Greece he wasted almost 3 million in 1 yr. in legal fees. So why is anyone surprised?

Long difficult road to climb to repair our school district. Declining school rankings. We cannot blame the financial situation, all suburban schools are in the same boat. The difference, our sb is indifferent to the wishes and values of the public. Holly we are not referring to you. You care about our kids and yours. To bad the rest don't have a plan other than to slice and dice our kids teachers and programs. All our kids deserve a right to a decent education. Keep up the good work Holly, we are with you. Soon you will have help on the sb. Next year laura and one other person we will all get behind. PTA parent

This is a shame.
Shame on us for electing disappointing candidates. I voted for Tom Flynn, big and I mean big mistake. Mike Kaney was pushing him and we gave him a chance. A real disappointment, I will not address diane Reynolds, I don't know where her head is but it is not in a place that is good for our children. Joan? Joan wouldn't be on the board if Kelly Harper would not have resigned.

How low do we have to go before we revolt. We pay huge taxes for this disappointing value for our bucks. Our children need more not less.

response to anony 6.12 1:28 pm,

yes not the teachers, but the invasive poor morale caused by the supt. and the sb. We support Holly Balaya more than ever. We didn.t give her our support last year for her election, but now her words are our words as well as Sally's. The admininistration has given up very little. Never considers our students, no plan, no care. Matt Dils only cares for himself and his own kids. To bad he doesn't realize that he needs to step down. He said he missed all those meeting because of work. Mr. Dils should prove this. We all work we don't take on anything we cannot give our time to especially our children's education. This Supt. is hated here, he refers to staff as IDIOTS. We have heard it ourselves. We are certainly united now and ARMOR stuff it, you no longer run the district.

I just wanted to clear something up. The News Article print by The Sun on 7/14 is wrong. I did not stand up in front of the school Board and state beliefs that the Adaptive Physical Education program has not met adequate criteria through the current academic year. I stood up and stated THE FACTS. The Hamburg Central School District is clearly not Meeting the NYS curriculum for Adaptive Physical Education
Something that Pupil Services has been clearly aware of from an email sent to them by our Child’s Educational Advocate on April 6 2012.
ATTITION SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS you have not heard the last of this issue

Riddle me this, why in the world did the people who are supposed to be representing me and my kids vote to extend the supers' contract. Shouldn't we have waited to see the effects of his "leadership" and "ingenuity" over the past year or two? Great. He saved money by laying off FTEs and he has been able to drive a wedge into the fractured HTA, laying the problems of HCSD at the feet of the teachers and staff while enjoying his 160K plus salary. What will the effect be of these "great ideas"? We won't know the complete effects until our current elementary kids get a little further down the way. Seriously SB, haven't you picked up on anything the community has been saying for the last year? You only have power b/c we granted it to. WE can also take it away. Stop wasting my money and playing chicken with my kids futures.

Hx teacher, no one on that sb does their homework but Holly Balaya, not even the supt. His lawyers were there to bail him out . Yes hx teacher "ignorance is an evil weed" You are on the mark with your comments. The sb has been duped by this evil supt. He is not liked here, he is hated here. Joan and the other two will be punished at the polls. Achramovitch is vindictive and destructive. Cares less about our students and my kids. Teacher and voter.

Achramovitch has duped the sb (minus one) but not the school community. He is distrusted. He has targeted teachers, staff and now he trying to create fear in our school community. We will seek our revenge toward him by voting his supporters out. HIS Armor group can no longer stop us.
Joan would be out if Kelly Harper had not resigned. Joan can thank kelly for her slim survival on the sb. Next year Armor is out of this, let Steve Achramovitch use them and disgard them when they are of no use to him. The revolt has begun.

The minute the school board renegotiated his contract they automatically added another year onto his contract. SB has to be deaf, dumb and blind to let this son of a bitch play the dirty behind the scenes shit that he has done here. He has lied to us and now we are starting to believe that Joan Calkins is right there with him. This will be her down fall. The school commnity was celebratory with Sally's election. Why, because she represents change and change for the better of our kids.

Supt. said tues that he is cutting and diminishing programs but doesn't know what he is doing yet, but will work on it. The sb thinks this is ok for our kids. The kids will have more study halls. Holly at least recognizes it for what it is. Thank you, we are very proud of you, we are behind you all the way all of us We recognize what you are doing for us and what you are going through for our kids. Thank you PTSA parents

To Ann Morelli, He did the unthinkable in your sd. He was in trouble there and in Greece as you apparently know. Only guy who would touch him D. Ogilvie. We had 5 good candidates, and he wasn't one of them. Steve applied after the dead line, so in all other ortanizations that takes you out of contention for position. Steve has offended some very influential people here. His house of cards will eventually fall and in its wake he will take down the rest of the sb.

Concerned, please get a copy of the email & publish it here the email regarding one of our teachers who addressed his school board in Springville. We need to see it. What was the response from the district? I could not believe that after it was brought to the sb attention the intentions of hurting and punishing that teacher that anyone on that school board thinks there isn't anything wrong with that abuse of their positions and then after that they vote to enrich his contract.

"He said it was known during budget discussions that there was the possibility of fewer electives and more study halls."

Seriously? This is what my taxes are going for? Hey Hamburg, look to other districts that are trying to do more w/ less. How about getting creative? Nope. Let's extend the contract of a super who hasn't done anything other than kill morale and take opportunities away from my kids. Shame on you SB.

I hope you are pursuing Calkins illegitimacy as current SB president.
This is solid info.

Joanie, Remember back in December 2010 when you unethically pushed Steve thru as the superintendent when other far more qualified people legitimately applied and were interviewed? Remember what you said??? " he has legal expertise". Good cause you are going to need it. You have presided over a BOE that has willfully neglected children and their physical education requirements. Holly told you the other night and YOU DID NOTHING and HAVE DONE NOTHING. Is steve concerned? He knows all about it. Wittman told him when he go here. Get your Harris Beach meter all plugged in...you are gonna need Marnie and Dick. Harris Beach should send out thank you cards to the taxpayers of hamburg.

Lets stand behind our Principal. Mike Gallagher is a stand up guy, this supt. is up to dirty tricks with him. Remain loyal, this is all we have left. Remember Achramovitch will deliver you false promises, lets keep our integrity.

Anonymous said...

Wow! Gallagher has you fooled!

Anonymous said...

to anonymous...gallagher does have you fooled. he has not stood up for his teachers, or maybe he has with his favorite departments. why are the cuts so uneven???? my child will lose out next year because we lost 2 science teachers and are bringing over the 8th grade science teacher to teach AP Bio. My daughter will be dropping that class. 5 science teachers in 2 years and only 2 in social, 1 in english and 1 in math. What is important in our schools. Not the health and science careers. Dissapointed as to where my tax dollars are going and to where cuts are being made. Poor decisions! Would love some explanation besides knowing that we have more studyhalls.

Anonymous said...

Where is the greatest development in the Buffalo area? THE MEDICAL CORRIDOR!!!!!! This is the field where jobs will be abundant and our best and brightest would be able to have wonderful careers. But that will not happen if experienced science teachers are not brought back to teach our students. They are getting short changed in this high school in science and will not stand a chance of being successful in science in college. But wait, maybe this is what the "fine" doctor is trying to achieve. Eliminate any future competition to her practice and the Hamburg families will be forced to go to her. Hmmmmmmmm. So families now and in the future will leave the area because their skills do not match where the development in the area is.
