Clubs at Hamburg High School, cut again.

Concerned received a troubling email from a young woman who stated she is a senior at Hamburg High School.  She wrote to express her concern about the recent clubs which were senselessly cut by Mr. Gallagher, high school principal.  From what was reported it is clear that certain clubs were targeted because Mr. Gallagher does not see the value in these clubs.

The clubs that were cut are:

Drama Club
Peace Club
Writer's Guild
&
Environmental Club

This student, who wishes to remained anonymous, because she is afraid that if she had her name published on this blog, the district would somehow or another make her life miserable.  She claims she has seen it happen, and she knows her parents have been called by members of the Board of Education and others asking to cause trouble for teachers.  This young woman is afraid to voice her opinion.  What a horrible situation for a young person to experience at the hands of people who claim to care about our youth.  What a sick fear for a young person to have in America.

Concerned is Concerned

Mr. Gallagher elected to cut four clubs at Hamburg High School so the district could save a grand total of less than $4,000.
What criteria did Mr. Gallagher use to cut these clubs?

We wonder why he apparently selected clubs which attract young people who likely identify with more socially liberal activities?

We wonder where these young people will go after school?

We wonder how will these young people learn to creatively express themselves in dramatics and writing in a school system which apparently has no respect nor desire to promote self expression.

Shame on Hamburg Board of Education and Mr. M. Gallagher.  You are cutting less than $4,000 in clubs while aggressively spending taxpayer dollars at the Harris Beach Law firm and installing high powered security cameras up and down the hallways of Hamburg High School.
We were once told, Democracy does not disappear overnight, it disappears one small decision after another.
The students of Hamburg High School and the community needs to squarely address this issue.  These children need community support.
One wonders if the likes of so many of the great Hamburg alums would have made it to their station in life without the full support of the community.

iDoes anyone else find it funny that the energy education award on the district's front page seems to have been awarded by the very same company the district has hired and whose policy is being used?

Anonymous said...

Absolutely! Trust me people. You must FOIL that energy contract and learn how much it really is costing you. Our district was fooled by this and it continues to divert money, trust, human energy and other resources away from education. Supposedly the "savings" exceeds the cost, but only if you use the energy company's software, which you PAY for, to calculate it. Then, try to correlate the "savings" the software says you have with your actual energy bills. I challenge you to try it and I'm betting it cannot be done. It's a scam. FOIL it. Post it. Demand accountability from those who signed that contract.

Graduates were much more successful in colleges selections a few years ago. Two of my kids graduate
four and five years ago and I still have two in the system. It is sad to see this. I am a graduate of Hamburg and we have cut the heart and soul out of our schools. I blame Matt Dils for losing that 2 million dollars to our kids schools. He is the only one left on the board that closed his eyes to that mess. My husband is a volunteer fireman with Matty Dils. We don't think he knows what is up with education.

The school board doesn't care about our kids only cares as evidenced by this loss of clubs.

Anonymous October 1 7:45 PM I am not one to jump to defense of our school board that often but I do have to call Bullshit on your clam that the Board cut these clubs and that the School Board doesn’t Care about our Kids . Let me set the record straight .My son is a member of one of the cut clubs. He was so upset about theses clubs getting cut he not only wrote a letter to each board member and the super he called Ms. Stephenson who didn’t know these clubs where cut and from what she told my son is going to do everything she can to get the funding back. I attend each school board meeting and nothing was brought up to the public about cutting clubs. I would also like to point out that each time I have brought any Issues up directly to school board members Stephenson or Balaya they have been willing to listen and do what ever is possible to make sure all of our kids are getting a fair deal. After all I stood up at the meeting in June and talked about our schools not meeting the state requirements in Physical Education that Ms Balaya has been working to correct. Don’t even get me started on how much help Ms. Stephenson was when we had Issues with pupil services .

The school district signed a one year pilot deal with administration and the teachers. I am not a teacher but many of our friends are.

What does APPR mean to us as parents and how harmful to teachers and kids? Where is the PTA on this, perhaps they could have a public meeting on this pros/cons Thanks A Fan and Alum

APPR basically means that 20 percent of a teachers review is based on student growth and each teacher will receive 2 observations per year. Each district was allowed to frame its plan w/ approval by the state. So a plan which was supposed to bring about consistency isn't really doing that. It's part of race to the top, which didn't = the big pay out we all thought it would. It's in effect this year, but because the state mandated January 2013 as the point when all agreements needed to be reached, most districts are scrambling to write SKIs and pretest. That it means for kids...more tests. More emphasis placed on assessments, which were supposed to measure student progress and lead to remediation. It's a slippery slope and many politicians are writing education policy without a clue to how kids learn. Not a hamburg thing. This is s state thing.

Parent teacher student assns in Niag Co. are calling for a delay in the assessment tests for their school districts.

Some parents are opting out of the assessment testing for their kids. Others that can afford it are sending their kids to private schools. In private schools they don't teach to the test. Remember a large percent of a teachers tenure is based on how well our kids do on these assesment tests. It only stands to reason that teaching to these assessment tests will be the teachers focus. Other aspects of learning are equally as important.

Anonymous said...

As far as opting out of the tests, I agree that it seems like a simple solution, however there are 2 issues that I have w/ it. (I am an educator, not an administrator, and I do no work for Hamburg. I am also a parent of school age children and believe that the testing craze is not what's best for kids) 1. If the number of students opting out exceeds a certain percentage- the district is held accountable. That is they can be found to be ineffective in the ratings. This is a state policy and while we need to take issue w/ our own district, we also need to start holding our state lawmakers accountable too. 2. I believe that if you do have your kids opt out, it is a slippery message we are sending our kids as to when it is ok to follow directions and when it isn't. Young kids don't understand what we are asking of them, they see it as its ok to not follow the rules sometime. It's not the teacher or even the school at fault here, it's the state. I think if you make this choice, keep your kid home, or make arrangements to have them go somewhere else during the tests.

While I also think that some teaching to the tests will be done, I think good teachers do there jobs and the assessments will show that. I do think that they are being tested way too much, which takes away time from the important things, and puts pressure on them. In my filed I do not have the luxury of spending as much time on a topic. Therefore my students have a very shallow knowledge of many topics, rather than a deeper understanding.

Nice write up in today's B News from a Hamburg parent. Notice she thanked everyone but the principals, superintendents and school board. The only thing keeping Hamburg barely afloat is the majority of parents, teachers, assistants and secretaries that care about our schools and students.

I read that opinion in the news, and it was nice to the teachers. Its parents like the author who value teachers and are respectful enough to realize that even if their kids didnt like a teacher doesnt mean the teacher is a bad teacher. Some parents in Hamburg have blinders on with their kids and blame the teachers for everything. One lady I know told me she had a kid who didnt do any work, didnt had in projects or assignments, and when the kid was reassigned to the teacher the next year the parents blamed the teacher for their kid being lazy. I am not a teacher and I would never be one...some parents unlike the lady in the paper today are rude and stupid. Wait til their kids flunk out of college.

A THOUSAND BUCKS PER YEAR FOR A TEACHER TO WORK WITH KIDS ON PLAYS OR WRITING IS A BARGAIN!!! IF THE CLUB MEETS 40 TIMES PER YEAR THATS $25.00 PER MEETING....MINUS TAXES.. THE TEACHER IS BETTER OFF GOING HOME AND CUTTING THE GRASS AT THAT RATE. MAYBE YOU SHOULD LOOK AT THE OVER $275.00 STEVE SENDS TO HARRIS BEECH PER HOUR. ANY YA KNOW A FAT CAT LAWYER SUCKLING ON THE BREAST OF THE TAXPAYER IS NOT A 60 MINUTE HOUR, ITS MORE LIKE 45. HAMBURG BOARD OF EDUCATION IS A MOCKERY, AND IN CASE YOU HAVENT BEEN WATCHING THE KIDS ARE GETTING LESS AND LESS EDUCATED. LOCAL EMPLOYERS WILL TELL YA, A HAMBURG GRADUATE DOESNT EVEN COME CLOSE TO HIS OR HER COUNTERPARTS IN OTHER DISTRICTS. WHY BECAUSE THE BOE HAS GUTTED EDUCATION AND DONE REALLY DUMB THINGS UNDER CALKINS. MAYBE JOANER IS WANTING HER DAUGHTER AND THE TEACH FOR AMERICA GANGSTERS TO TAKE OVER HAMBURG, THEN WE CAN ALL BECOME ILLITERATE CHUMPS.

Our children are successful for two reasons teachers and parents backing up their teachers. My kids are taught respect for education and that means their teachers and Principals. Ask your kids, today many kids run wild and I mean in the MS and HS. Some students bully their teaches through their parent. Parents don't want to parent, they want to blame anyone but themselves for their kids attitude towards school.

Not A Hamburg Teacher said...

I agree that the teachers are wonderful. The problem with expecting to do it for free is basically saying that we don't value their time. In the end, the small amount of money is paenuts compared to what they usually put into the club from their own pockets and lose to taxes. Once they start doing things for free, why should the district pay them. This district has already sold the teachers out again and again. Every year its the same story, take this freeze and it will save jobs. The next year, those saved jobs are back on the chopping block.I would rather see the teachers make a competitive wage and see the administrators take a cut b/c I want Hamburg to attract and retain the best teachers as seasoned vets retire. I asked my friend who teaches in Hamburg to level with me - is he comfortable sending his kids to the district with everything that is happening. He believes that even though he is disgruntled he still sees himself and the other teachers giving 100%. That is what keeps me sending my kids. We as parents must fight for our kids and their teachers. The BOE and administrators are beholdent to us and we must not forget that.

Anonymous said...

Check the facts. An English teacher and math teacher were both cut. No subject is "safe" so to speak. Class sizes are anything but small. If the superintendent would release class sizes, the community would see how kids in the MS and HS are in enormous classes because of three years of cuts.

To anonymous at 8:40 am, check your facts. Look at the number of social and science positions cut compared to English and math over the past 3 years. Not equal yet all required courses. Pull the list with courses run and number enrolled in each, then you can see where favoritism lies. Be honest with yourself. Science courses with over 20 kids signed up for them and they were dropped, yet English electives run with 8 students in them. Cuts should be equal across the board....administrative too!

What an absolute shame. I am sickened to see these clubs cut. It's a fact that these were some of the most popular clubs at the high school, and hoards of kids packed the classrooms where meetings were held, week after week. I am utterly befuddled at the rationale behind such a vindictive move. And thank you to Anonymous (October 9, 2012 8:40 AM) for clearing up the fact that English and math did see cuts (in fact, two English positions were cut). Boston Valley Mom,

we heard it last night, "voters approved the budget". Yes we did approve the budget, but we were never informed that kids clubs would be cut or that our kids at Boston Valley would be in a 5th grade class with more than 25 students, 5 kids with IEP's (individual education plans). (Kids needing extra help, one kid is my child). The school board gave Armor and Charlotte Ave. extra teachers when their numbers exceeded 25. What are we in Boston the unfavored step child? When WE passed the budget we were NEVER TOLD that the school board was going to hurt our kids like this. I will be the first to say thank you if you right this wrong. Where is Tom Flynn, he campaigned and said to us that we don't have a representative in Boston. Well Mr. Flynn if you don't do something we will still not have a member of the school board advocating for us. Thank you to Mrs. Stevenson she is and advocate.

Welcome to my fellow Bostonian Parents !!!
It’s nice to see that you have found this blog. I would like to point out a few things

1 As I pointed out last night our super has said he is unable to meet state requirements. This was brought up at the June school board Meeting the same meeting that the school board approved his new contract. Just to set the record straight the only school board member who voted no on his contract was Holly Balaya keep in mind this happen the month before Ms. Stephenson was sworn in.

2. I find it rather insulting that they cut the Environmental club, but at the September School Board Meeting the School Board gave its approval to start one at Union Pleasant elementary. The school Board needs to stop sending mixed messages. I feel if you are going to do one thing for a set of students you need to do it for all students. Including fixing the class size issues at Boston Valley.

3.As for mister Flynn if you think for one minuet that he was going to be the “VOICE” FOR OUR KIDS IN BOSTON your wrong. Mr. Flynn has stated that he has better things to do then attend school board meetings. You can it out for yourself it said at the July 17 school board meeting and was printed in the Buffalo News and the Hamburg sun.

If you want your issues addressed contact Sally Stephenson or Holly Balaya
They are putting our Kids First.

Ms. Collins you never told us said...

To all readers,

our kids clubs, programs and class size at a unmanageable level.

Get the message school board and ass whole supt. We cannot have anyomre cuts to our kids classroom experience YOU NEED TO START CUTTING YOUR OWN SALARIES AND START TO CUT ADMINISTRATION. We are a small district and you salaries are insane, we don't need all those fat cats in administration

Welcome to the boe meeting. Nice to see some new faces. I hate to be the one to break it to you people, but when you vote yes on a school budget, you are only approving the grand total dollar amount. You don't have ANY say in how that money is spent. If you want more input in HOW your money is spent and what the district's priorities are, you can a) become a board member; or b) elect board members who make those decision in line with your beliefs and values. You can demand transparency and ask to see the budget line-by-line, but the board doesn't need to stick with it. They are able to move money around at will, hence all those budget tranfers. Your biggest weapon is your vote. Maybe if a budget is defeated once, the board will finally take a look at spending taxpayer money more appropriately, rather than on legal services, petty lawsuits and outrageous administrative salaries.

Check Achramo's contract. There's probably something in there about getting budgets approved. Superintendents who cannot get the annual budget passed, don't usually keep their jobs...

To Anonymous 8:51 on 10-10 Is that true about the budget? I thought that the budget presented in May as a pie graph showing each "slices" allocation had to be adhered to with some small amount of money available to move around. That is what the voters approved - that pie. I know Hamburg doesn't always follow the rules (LOL) - but someone should really look into this. Can someone clarify this for me or tell me where to get the correct info from SE? They brought back all the aides they laid off and added additional teachers already and it seems they would have/should have known the numbers were so close to those classrooms going above 25 they would have planned better. So sad for the students, parents, teachers and staff that this BOE is not held accountable. LOOKING FORWARD TO MAY!

What did the actual resolution say, word for word, on the ballot? There was no pie graph on the ballot. All you approved was the total dollar amount. The resolution on the ballot on which you marked Yes or No, simply authorized the board to spend up to a certain grand total dollar amount. Legally, that's ALL the boe is obligated to adhere to. They produced a lot of pretty pictures and charts to "sell" you that dollar amount. But legally, they can choose to spend it any way they want. They will tell you that a contingency budget only hurts the kids, but that's not true either. Kids programs, sports and transportation are protected under a contingency budget.

How much did the GymB4 (the video PE program) cost the district?? Who decided to buy it. Who was included in the decision making process before it was purchased? It is going to be impossible to use for a few reasons so it was a waste of money but how much money? This is a perfect example of: THIS IS NOT THE BUDGET THE TAXPAYERS APPROVED.

Also the district (Achromo and the board) are telling the teachers that in addition to EVERYTHING ELSE, they must collect data and document use of thIS video nonsense/program in their classrooms. How and when will teachers be given an opportunity to TEACH what they need to teach? When they aren't giving a test or teaching PE? When you think it can't get more ridiculous, it ALWAYS does!

If someone is willing to dig a bit they may discover that the effort to restructure the PE program may have resulted from a futile attempt by the Achramorat to lay blame on one instructor for another (protected) teacher's acts of commission and omission. Again stymied, it appears that Achramo has ceaselessly pursued an agenda of revenge. If you think this proposition is far fetched, I suggest a bit of research.

NOT a hamburg teacher! said...

I have to just chime in with this,,,The Hamburg Teachers Association is the weakest union in New York State. Big deal that the union prez read a statement that P.E. teachers should not be replaced with videos. The Superintendent does not fear the union, not one bit. The Union was stupid enough to think that if they took a WAGE FREEZE that Acromo would not cut them, haha what a joke. This is the same union that in the past has agreed to allow the Administration to lie about teachers, slander their name(s), and try to ruin their lives with the promise of a "You scratch my back, We will scratch yours" deal, only to be boned every time contract negotiations come up. Hamburg Teachers are paid near the bottom in Erie County, while Acromo is paid well compared to his peers. Seriously, when will the HTA wake up and realize that electing a sleepy and confused union president and trying to "play nice" with the administration does not work. Soon ALL of the Hamburg P.E. teachers will be replaced by videos. Soon they will take all the students to the auditorium at the same time, pay an aide $8 per hour to supervise them and let them watch a P.E. video for 30 minutes instead of taking P.E. class. News flash UNION: you have P.E. teachers who were cut this year to part time. These teachers have families, bills, mortgage payments etc. The Comissioners regulations (section 135.4) state "(a) all pupils in grades K-3 shall participate in the physical education program on a daily basis. All pupils in grades 4-6 shall participate in the physical education program not less than three times each week. The minimum time devoted to such programs (K-6) shall be at least 120 minutes in each calendar week, exclusive of any time that may be required for dressing and showering" Acromo is slapping every teacher in the district in the face by implementing this video P.E. instead of hiring extra P.E. staff to bring the district into compliance with the comissioners regulations. This is not just a problem for P.E. teachers, it is a problem for all teachers. You must stand together. If one teacher is being wronged, they all are. If the HTA had any balls what so ever they would march 200 strong to the board meeting and demand that this crap stop now. Most board members are weak and will cave in if you stand up to them. They are on the board because they want to be liked. If you show them that if they let Acromo get away with this that you will not like them anymore, they will direct him to stop this nonsense. Get a pair John and lead your troops! Worry about making friends and "being nice" when you are off the clock.

The HTA is a total joke led by a complete moron as president! (opinion of course)

120 minutes of P.E. per student!!! said...

Dear John and HTA:

So you stood up and asked Arcomo not to BUY video programs for children to watch instead of hiring additional P.E. teachers to bring the District into compliance with the Comissioners Regulations regarding P.E. minutes (all students must receive 120 minutes per week). Acromo responded by blowing you off and buying said program and directing the teachers to implement it. NOW WHAT? Dont you think you should answer? Well lets see, if a non tenured teacher does something that a Hamburg Administrator does not like they make lies up about the teacher and fire them using the lies as the reasons. If a tenured teacher does something that a Hamburg Administrator does not like they transfer them to another building. So what can the teachers do? How about tell Acromoscum that the Hamburg Teachers will not volunteer for "curriculum development work, family fun nights, fund raisers, chaperoning, etc." Basically you need to tell Acromo that the Hamburg Teachers will not work one second beyond their contract requirements until the video is scraped and the P.E. teachers are hired back to full time and additional teachers are hired to bring the district into compliance (120 minutes of P.E. per student). Its great to try to be nice and get along, but by now you should realize John that you and the HTA are being made a fool of. Acromo snickered as you read that statement at the last board meeting. He does not respect you or the Hamburg Teachers. Stand up for yourself!

Stand up for all our kids and teachers. The teachers are expected to give more and the fat cats(administrators) do less or demand stipends. Are they for real. We need to band together and electe 3 new members of the board if this jerk Achramo continues. Wake up this ass hole is at war with our childrens education. He is slimmy and dishonest. Where is the school board on this.

We as parents are against a video, for our children's physical education requirement. What about accidents, First aid or CPR? What is the school district thinking? Next a video for all educational. Where are we going with this? Cut the administrators and give our kids what they deserve a decent shot at an education.

Klozman,

glad your around. So right

AchramoRAT. You know him well a vengeful SOB.

John sign nothing, dealing with the devil said...

John, don't sign anything for the HTA that AchramoRAT puts before you. Teacher Coordinator positions should be voted on by our membership.

Sign nothing John, Steve Achramovitch is an enemy of education and the destruction of what is good about our teaching profession. The kids suffer

Klozman you are right, he is punishing our physical education dept. and punishing our students.

Cut Supt salary and give my kids smaller classes

Sounds like the HTA needs to elect a new president. But will they demand an election? Hope so, but I doubt it.

Teacher coordinator positions are making a comeback with a big stipend, yet there are several teachers that have been cut over the past few years still awaiting a call back? Class sizes are out of control at middle and elementary level. Don't have kids in the high school yet so I'm not sure what their class sizes are, but I'm sure they are getting out of hand too. I can't believe that some of my kids' former teachers were let go to pay for: gym class videos, teacher coordinator stipends and frivolous law suits! My sister was hoping to request some of the teachers my kids had for her kids, but half of them are gone! Sadly, starting to regret our decision to buy a house in this district. The kids are the ones paying the price and their teachers are dropping like flies! I cannot believe that this district can function like this for much longer.

Wasteful spending at the High School
At the October 9 board meeting we where told that the school has to find a way to save money that’s why cutting the clubs happen. Each club they cut saved the school 1000 dollars. Today I got a postcard from the high school advertising a College Information night from the school counselor’s office.
Lets look at numbers
Address labels average price 8.00 for 200 x 900 students 24.00
Postcards average price 25.00 for 200 x 900 students 40.00
Stamps .32 cents x 900 students 288.00
That’s 368 dollars
Now add In the time used to compose the postcard, pick the script or font , print the postcard , print address labels the time used sticking labels on 900 postcards and the time putting stamps on each .
We ‘ll say 10 dollars an hour for 24 hours or three days is 240 dollars x 2 people working on it is 480 dollars. Now add the 480 to the cost of supplies 368 that makes at total of 848. 00. That’s 158 dollars short of the cost of one club. How many times a year does the school do such mailing? Looks like all four clubs could be save by eliminating such mails in just a year.
I know what you’re going to say these mailing send home important information that parent’s need to know about … that’s True but didn’t our school just start using the parent portal for such Important Information like report card and doesn’t our school have an automated calling system that could be utilized for such information. I mean it works for snow days. Now this is just a drop in the hat of ways we could be saving money. Money that should be going to the classroom.

I say hire enough p.e. teachers to bring the district into compliance with the commissioners regulations. PURCHASING a video program while p.e. teachers are laid off is a horrible thing to do. It's time for the board to stand up to AcromoRAT.

Thanks you for the blog stop testing, it was helpful. What it seems is those $$$$ are going to mandates and not the kids classes or extra activities. Our $'s are being spent to accom. the mandated state testing and teacher eval;s. It appears that the mandates are not improving education but hurting us. Race to the top funds is an oxymoron.

Thanks for that blog site. Parent

The Achrabat is flying high, convinced of his own invulnerability, and though the multitude might piss and moan (or ooh and aah), at his deceptive, illegal exploits, only one BOE member is effectively taking the steps necessary to collapse the net that perpetually saves him during his frequent failure to execute a personal version of the "Triple Lindy."

Valued readers, absent documented proof, do not trust one syllable of the malodorous detritus that oozes from that gaping maw. Short hairs present for snatching by the undeceived ...envision the agonizing screams...ARRGGHH, Mateys, ARRGGHH.
