South Bronx Schools calling for Dr. Joan Calkin's sister Lucy to be arrested.

So readers, just when you thought it could not get much worse under Hamburg School Board of Education President Joan Calkins, people downstate in the South Bronx are calling for Joan's sister Lucy to be arrested for reasons associated with her flawed education policy.

Both of these sisters are members of the Hamburg Hall of Fame, and should removed because of their poor judgement in impacting public education, and the impact their horribly impaired decisions have had on children.

Wow morally bankrupt is the best to describe this situation. Two

sisters are turning education upside down. Look at our once great education system, it is in free fall and hurting our kids.

What is Lucy C stats on her program and what is Lucy Calkins research? How many students have suffered life long reading deficiencies under her program. I would not want that on my conscience. My kids teacher says that we have this program here. Any information on this.

Our kids teacher aids are doing the work of our lost office secretaries. What have our kids gained? They are shifting staff into areas they don't belong in. Gym by video. How low are we going to allow this school district to go?

What a shame, and shame on Dr. Calkins for experimenting with my elementary children. Why does everyone kiss her ass? Why doesn't anyone question her pushy agenda? This should not be in our Hamburg dist our elementary kids will suffer and will never recover as demonstrated in the BRONX.

Not A Hamburg Teacher said...

I'm a little confused. When I asked last year what the adopted reading and and writing program of the district is I was told Scott Forseman for reading and no official program for writing. Calkin's ideas have some validity (I said some - immersion into the content areas is one) but it does not jive with the rigor of the new common core.Did the district officially adopt Calkin? BTW- my daughter is sitting in a classroom w/ 25 second graders and the teachers took a pay freeze to save jobs and the magic fix of - Layoffs - is being heard again. When is this going to stop? When she's sitting in a classroom w/ 30+? Perhaps some money can be found by cleaning house in at the admisitration building. I still can't believe they all took a pay raise before their freeze.

Lucy Calkins program was not a pilot program here. The program was handed to us without our input. Just wait until the parents catch on to what it is really about. The Calkins egos.

Look at the Bronx site this is the future for our students.

Thanks for exposing this

Our teachers are our heros, the administration our enemy.

The decisions that are being made are sneaky, sly and not in step with what we expect for our tax dollars and our kids education. We know this ped. Pres. and her Supt. is running us into the ground. Some suggest OP and I agree. The parents in OP would never tolerate this cut rate education that is now being forced on our kids.

We all want to tell Steve Achramovitch to F himself. He is generally hated here by staff.

We will continure to smile and play nice nice, but come election time we will double time to oust those that support his sneaky agenda. He is dishonest and not honorable.

HHS TEACHERS...YOU ARE STUCK WITH HIM. MIKE GALLAGHER IS HERE TO STAY. HE ANNOUNCED IT AT A MEETING TODAY. HE IS USELESS AND INSINCERE. IN OUR OPINION HE IS A LIAR, AND CAN NEVER MAKE A STRAIGHT DECISION. ROTTEN TO THE CORE. HE PITS TEACHERS AGAINST TEACHERS. IF I HEAR ONE MORE THING FROM THE SOCIAL STUDIES DEPT ABOUT THEM TEAACHING A BUSINESS COURSE WHEN THEY SHOULD BE TEACHING ECONOMICS I AM GONNA SCREAM. AND WHAT DOES GALLAGHER DO??? TAKES THE HIGHEST QUALIFIED ECONOMICS TEACHER AND STICKS HER IN 9TH GRADE AND THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER IS TRYING TO TACKLE ECONOMICS. DUMB IS AS DUMB DOES... WAIT TIL BUSINESS AND SOCIAL STUDIES IS CUT, BECAUSE THE DOPES CANT SEE WHAT THEY ARE DOING....IT HAPPENED IN HEALTH. I KNOW I WAS THERE. GALLAGHER IS A MEAN MAN, WHO SHOULD BE PUT IN THE BASEMENT OF THE ADMIN BLDG. THIS IS OUR OPINION.

Thanks for the BRONX site. A wealth of info. Past few years the education is down the toilet here. Our standards are slipping and we don't blame our kids teachers, they are forced to endure the cuts, loss of programs, and now cutting corners so badly that we are reduced to a video. Now Dr. Calkins sister's program is a dangerous experiment with my kids education.

Neglected Middle School said...

I hope other parents and teachers caught FRONTLINE on PBS the other night. We are parents of a middle school child and two in elementary school. Frontline spelled it out clearly the importance of middle school. Many students are lost at this critical stage in their lives. The foundation for HS set and also set for failure if middle school is neglected. So the big question the middle school has been hit badly by the Supt. Achramovitch. We care about our kids class size, loss of clubs, programs and the fact that some of our kids have way too many study halls. Our kids need direction and structure. We care but the Supt. doesn't. Most school board members don't have the grapes to let him know that we are angry and this message is growing.

Brent Jordan should make a public apology to the staff at HHS. He made a sick inappropriate comment which reflects a serious lack of judgement at the end of the faculty meeting today. Discussion was around Gallagher leaving and Brent shouted out in front of the entire staff that he could go to Clymer...it was sick. THen he realized what he said and shouted out Warsaw... Mr. Jordan, do you think you are funny? I know someone in that aud today that is friends with one of the two superintendents you mocked. How about an apology, Jordan. . Please apologize.

Lucy Calkins for what it is worth said...

Lucy Calkins program isn't in Orchard Park, why here? Orchard Park would never entertain this experiment with their students. What do you do when you fail them?

Stay with what works, PHONICS and the core that has served us well.

What will Dr. Calkins do when our kids cannot read or write, blame the teachers, parents and not the lousy program forced down our kids throats. Dr. Calkins listen to us parents, stop dictating to us, we know better than you. Stop messing with what works. Dr. Calkins should be ashamed of herself for what is going on in our
middle school.

Mike Gallagher is far better than Steve Achramovitch's hand picked lacky. We need to stand behind Mike and he needs to know that he needs to stand behind us. We need a mutal agreement so we don't fall into bed with the devil (Achramo). He wants a piece of Mike and many of us teachers.

We need to get behind anyone who will stop Achramo and those that refuse to look at his horrible past with Ken/Ton and Greece.

May is not far off.

Principal Carol Berris report to the WASHINGTON POST:

'That they would change their teacher assignments next year and assign them less needy students so that they could protect these excellent teachers from the ineffective rating.

The unintended consequences to the students are beginning."

Principal Berris describes how educators who have the highest need students are being labeled ineffective by the new NYS Teacher
evaluation system - which includes TEST SCORES.

Teachers who have great talent for supporting students who face lots of challenges will shy away from these students.

Schools will encourage low performing students to drop out of school.

Higher need students could possibly be segrated.

This evaluation system based on student tests scores could also be used to load up a teacher who is targeted by administration to get rid of him/her.

Where does a teacher go with a weak Union? Teachers and Parents need to get involved.

substitute teacher causing problems for teachers in middle school. What is up with this? Keep her gossip out of our schools.

Principal Carlo Barris has it right.

Our special needs children will be treated separately. We will be going backwards not forward, and who could blame their great teachers. My child is not a good test taker, and this has nothing to do with the teacher. It is all about his disability. Why would anyone endorse this? I will keep my kid home on testing days opt out. Why punish him and his teacher? For what NOT HIS FAULT OR HIS TEACHERS EITHER. Just a fact of life. This is a failed system and will hurt a lot in the end prove useless. Thank anyone for listening

To anony 4:02 PM,

I believe that this play on words
( arrest) was started in the Bronx, where the Lucy Calkins program has failed its students. The stats back up this claim. A generation lost to a program. I agree get the kids to read and write, but why abandon phonics?

Many impoverished households have mo morale compass, literature as has been handed down for generations has worked. Yes read what you enjoy, but perhaps assigned reading may open up their world to places, events, morality that they my welcome. We need to expose our kids to more not less. Structure is good for many, don't throw it out.

Pushy overbearing parents.

My child can do no wrong

It is someone elses fault

do not challenge my child

never, never tell them they are wrong

give them a sense of entitlement

my child would never do that

Well let me tell you fellow parents, when you kid fails, cannot function in college, has a drug problem and you ask yourself where you went wrong. I will tell you,

they had no responsibility

they claimed to never be at fault

they were never made to deal with their own minor problems, you always jumped in and made excuses. You were too quick to blame and accuse others.

Let you kids know that you love them, support them, but will not fight their battles, refuse to let them blame others when they themselves had a hand in the misdeed. Make you kids responsible for their own actions.
Our generation is failing our kids and I mean just in the past few years.

They are called helicopter parents.

It is sad that they get away with this and they continue to protect themselves and lock down on a program that is not working as evidenced in the Bronx. It is too great a risk for our children I'm sure some elements of the Lucy Calkins program is ok, but please no experiments with our Hamburg kids. Thank you

pay grab for administration said...

Yes a pay increase and then they claim a pay freeze. Administration not totally honest.

end of tenure said...

Read Principal Carol Barris article in the Washington Post. She expressed her concerns with APPR and assessment tests. Teaching to the test. Other districts haven't endorsed this. I wonder where the common sense is with our union membership? This could mean the loss of many great tenured teachers as well as Principals. We are fools for endorsing this. It is the end of tenure for anyone of us.

How much do you trust STEVE ACHRAMOVITCH?

From South Bronx

welcome to our blog. Some sound advise from us to you.

Use a digital camcorder. This little darling will be the belle of the ball in your attorney's office as you go back over your observation and see all the LIES that were created about your lesson.

Be wise and protect your teaching profession. Teachers are under attack with APPR. Many good teachers will see their career come to an end.

APPRinfo? said...

Concerned,

please some info on APPR, let's start a real discussion on it. We respect that you will have more than the bull the Supt. wants us to have. Other districts are protecting their teachers and students. Hamburg Supt. Achramovitch is throwing us under the bus.

The revenue stream with our Supt. goes to lawyers and private consultants.

Dr. Calkins should leave. She has been micromanaged by a sleezy Steve Achramovitch. We as parents have seen a decline in the offerings to our children, we are finally beginning to take a stand. I have lived here all my life, my husband the same. We cannot stand what is happening to our kids education here. I hate to agree, Orchard Park is so far ahead of us educationally. We need to set the bar higher and if that means ridding this district of the leaders that are allowing this we must.
