Hamburg Teachers Union and Achramo strike an APPR deal?

Well Hamburg teachers, union president John Mrozek has done it again.  According to March 29, 2013 edition of the Buffalo News, the union and Achramo et al have agreed on an APPR agreement.  Many Hamburg teachers said they learned about this "deal" in the Buffalo News.

Hamburg teachers have not seen the APPR agreement the News reports the teachers will vote on upon returning from Spring Break.

The HTA has not provided the membership with the APPR agreement.  Hamburg schools were dismissed on Thursday for a 10 day Spring Break, and the teachers will return to school April 8, 2013 and will promptly be asked to vote on an APPR agreement they have never seen.

Why is the HTA withholding the agreement from their membership?

Sound familiar?

The Hamburg Teachers union did the same thing in the days before Christmas break.  In December, the teachers learned the day before break they would vote on APPR on the day they returned to school in January.  Once again, Concerned Hamburger smells a rat.

So, what is the hurry Hamburg teachers, and why did many of you learn about this "deal" in the Buffalo News?

Concerned opines that the Hamburg Teachers Association (HTA) is trying to jam through an APPR plan to pave the way for a less political budget adoption and Bored of Education election, thus guaranteeing another 3 years of Dr. Joan Calkins and Steve Achramovitch.

It appears the HTA leadership is being cajoled into this agreement so that all the concerns about Achramo and the Bored President the teachers expressed in the last APPR vote will be softened.

The teachers voted LOUD AND CLEAR of their distrust of Achramo and Bored President Calkins.  Hamburg Teachers do not be fooled.  APPR under any conditions is not good, this is simply old wine in new bottles.

Hamburg teachers Vote NO on APPR, and tell Mr. Mrozek and Mrs. Maureen Garra, HTA Chief Negotiator to step down from their positions.  It is clear they are only concerned with making Joan and Steve look good at your expense.

With all due respect, please get your facts correct before stoking the fire.

Honestly, HTA just vote no and let the State Ed put APPR in place for you. And if Calkins gets voted in again the entire HCSD community are idiots! The morale in Hamburg has gotten worse and worse over the last few years - you need to rebuild and the first step to that is to elect new BOE members and oust SA! Just sayin'!

What facts are incorrect? The teachers were not given APPR, they werent told it was agreed upon with the district. In fact, the teachers were told by the HTA that they were going to "sit" on APPR until a new contract is negotiated. What do you expect from Maureen Garra, she is the HTA Chief Negotiator- well qualified...an elementary school spec ed teacher who needs an IEP herself. What facts are incorrect anonymous 11:13? I work in the district and NOT ONE TEACHER as one ounce of RESPECT OR CONFIDENCE IN MOTHER MAUREEN. SHE HERSELF IS AS DUMB AS THIS APPR PLAN. AN OPINION OF MOST TEACHERS.

We were told there was a plant be voted on that would be provided after break. Voting implies that the contract committee first accepted the document. The full plan is going to be given at a mandatory staff meeting, which the distric is giving us time to hold (with union members only) during contractual time. We are then being given one week to review the document before being asked to vote. Sounds reasonable tome. All this went out via email Friday. If you followed the district expectation to check your email at the start and end of the day, you would know...

9:58 Anonymous....you keep saying the district. Who is telling you what to do the district or the union. Mandatory meeting? Sounds serious!!! A mandatory union meeting...run by the politburo? Really, what country do you live in???? Most teachers read about APPR in the paper. Wake up fool, the wool is about to be pulled down across you eyes. When are those HTA elections?

Concerned Hamburger, We learned last week that former president clifford huen is running for the president of the Hamburg Teachers Association. Yep, he and his bride Mary Lavis, who has been counting the beans of the HTA for years, and in that capacity a flame ignited between the treasurer and the Mr. Huen. Yep, they just cant let go of the HTA. They travel out of town and pretend to go to conferences on the HTA dime. This story has been confirmed by many an HTA member. You should do a story on Mary, Cliff and the HTA....the office over by the old Chamber of Commerce....and ask Cliff what he did when he lost the election 4 years ago....and the 250K in union dues the HTA has squirreld away. The HTA membership should riot with these self serving losers on the docket. We heard Clff, Mary and their lacky Scott Weidman. Concerned dig into the HTA insanity!!!! That is a great post. Thanks for the APPR tip....no doubt we will get screwed again.

9:58's response to 7:41:
At some time you need to get over your blinding anger and act like a reasonable adult. I mentioned 'the district' twice. Once to state they are giving us time to facilitate review the document by giving us contractual time to do so. the second to state if you didn't check your email, as is expected at the end of the day, your lack if knowledge is your own fault. As the email stated, there is going to be a general meeting followed by break out sessions for the different levels- HS vs MS vs Elem so you can ask your questions (or, in your case, certainly state your non- related complaints about Achramovitch, the school board and our salaries) In the end, if you don't like the union leadership, there is nothing you can do about it until election time. Might as well take a look at the APPR plan before you instantly deem it unreasonable.

8;49, Blinding Anger? I could careless about the salary issue. I am on top step with longevity, and as a person who works 188 days per year, I am wildly over paid. District time to do union business? Only in Hamburg? Did you invite Achramovitch and Calkins to the meetings? I heard Johnie is in their back pocket. Appr is bad for teachers, but that clearly doenst concern you. Reasonable, I have been around over two decades....all deals have been dirty. Take a look at Cliff Huen, and ask yourself how he slide out on a FAS over over $110K, and that was for working only a half day. Your blind trust reveals you ignorance....have you ever read the teacher contract? Why do you think Achramo has been on his rebranding tour, and Joan Flynnie have been barging into classrooms to "observe???" They are scared of the elections, and the HTA will roll over and play dead

11:26 top step was all you had to say. I had wondered if that was your situation. Why don't you leave the voting to those of us who are going to be around long enough to be affected by APPR. I am not concerned about APPR because I do my job and I do it well. And yes, I have read the contract. Not sure how that plays into this conversation though. Or how Cliff Huen's final average salary does either. Or for that matter, the Board of Ed or Achramovitch. None of those things are going to change whether we approve APPR or not. Let's not put the cart before the horse and assume we are getting the short end of the stick before we e en give the new APPR document a chance.

Anonymous,
No doubt you do your job...but do the kids do theres. I have been looking at this conversation this morning, and you are naive. Did the teachers vote APPR down last time, because they think Achamovitch is vindictive? Didnt our union show us white papers in the high school cafe that said the number one problem is Steve, and number 2 is Joan? I have never in my life heard a teacher say they dont do their job. In fact, I work with people in Hamburg who claim they do their job, but they dont. They are horrible teachers...Hamburg is full to the brim with them. Our union sucks, it always has sucked. And YES Cliff is to blame...a rotten weak man who screwed more teachers ( in more ways than one) than he ever bothered to help. Maybe you are one of the "exempt" employees not covered by APPR, like John Mrozek. That top step teacher has it right. Vote this down ASAP, and when that job is done get rid of the willy nilly dumb dumb chief negotiator who teachers special education. Really, wake up silly!

To anonymous we have no facts, the district and Union is keeping the facts from us as usual. Please don't think you are going to ram this down our throats without sufficent time to review and comment and as well ask for corrections. Union you work for us not Steve Achramovitch and Dr. Joan Calkins. She will cut our nuts off if she is re elected.

Please tell me you are wrong, not that self serving Cliff Huen again. If Scott Weiden doesn't distance himself from Cliff he will not get our groups support.

Concerned please place front and center the warning from NYSUT Pres.

We need to see it not everyone of us has seen Mr.Iananozzi's message.

Privatization and Union busting is what this is all about. read and weep

I will not get involved in the bickering, but I am voting no, because it is bad for children.

opt out and that means vote no,state cannot withhold state funding as demonstrated in nycity.

Stand up for education and vote no, our kids deserve this.

the real dope. The appr agreement will be presented to the membership at a general Meeting on or around the 11th for review. The membership should review it. The plan to hold the appr. agreement as hostage to gain a better contract is shot because the distict will receive the aid reguardless. The membership has to us their own conscience whether or not to vote for the plan.
1. The contract commitee hammered out a plan so favarable to the teachers it will probably barely pass the state.
2. The State legislature has threatened to put their own plan in for districts that don't approve their own.
3. NYSET will not fight the law because the aid package is so generous to the districts.

Those are the facts.

excessive testing is bad for kids especially special children who think they are doing well, until their self esteem is crushed after taking these tests . Sorry this is about our kids and I do feel for the teachers who are forced into this terrible situation

Do what is right for our children

Once a union signs the contract, we cannot fight it. If it is imposed or forced on us we have a right to object. Check out the brave actions in New York City. Thanks to the brave group in NYC, with holding school funding tied to contracts has been struck down by the Courts.

Joan & Steve wrote the last APPR appeals section of last APPR proposed contract that gave the Supt. (thus Joan) all the power to take away all our rights to appeal, grieve, appeal to commissioner of Ed. as well as the courts. Achramovtich's word was final, making Achramovitch dictator of teaching. Sorry I don't trust him, I will vote after May election for this but not before, he is too sneaky

dont try to pretend this is about the students and there selfesteem. what a crok. the teachers are whinening. spoiled. the tax payeres cant afford to lose $450k

Anonymous said...

Do what is right for my children, stop this testing and stand up for something other than yourselves, vote no and take a stand.

Whining!!! what do you know about excessie testing? Haven't you seen the massive cheating by administrators and all those involved in testing around the country? Have you not noticed the amount of education time taken from real education for these tests. What about all our children's personal information being available to testing compnies? How can or will they use our kids, profiling them maketing them as well gaining financially from them.

We did not lose $450,000. We have not lost a cent. Get it right how far does one prostitute oneself for a dollar at the expense of a child. Please don't call teachers whinney. I have a good idea where this came from too bad we will not be voting for Joan or anyone who is with her or Steve Achramovitch. We will know what you stand for before we support you.

Morale amongst teachers is low. How is voting no against APPR going to improve morale? Having a plan imposed by Cuomo, King, or Achramovitch will certainly bring morale even lower-if that's possible. And the union will have given up any voice in the process by voting no.

Anonymous said...

How about a post regarding high stakes testing and the judge allowing the suit against Michelle Rhee ( the queen of high stakes testing and union busting)? A better way to fight state testing than voting no to APPR.

How in the world does the passage of APPR guarantee another 3years of Joan and Steve? I fail to see the connection.
