Dr. Joan Calkins: "the darkest days in the history of Hamburg Central School District"

Doctor Joan Calkins
Dr. Joan Calkins has been sitting on the Hamburg Bored of Education since July 1, 2009. Dr. Calkins has presided over the darkest days in Hamburg Central School history.  Shortly after being elected, Joan calculated an internal dust-up against then Bored President Gregory Wichlacz.  It has been reported that Dr. Calkins' employs threats as one of her modi operandi.  Several Bored members have told stories of Joan's bullying and quest to keep all business of the Bored one big secret.  Within ten months of Joan's arrival on the Bored, Dr. Mark Crawford quit and ran off to West Seneca, and then Associate  Superintendent Gordon Kerr ran off to a sabbatical, which turned out to be permanent due to his alleged inappropriate conduct with a subordinate.  Joan's own conduct is worth examination. A citizen filed New York State Commissioner of Education charges against Dr. Calkins because the Bored President willfully lied about employees. It has been suggested, that Joan's sister, Lucy Calkins, a "guru" of education intervened with NYSED, and the charges were denied by Commissioner King.  Despite the evidence that Joan lied, she dodged the bullet of being removed from the Hamburg Bored of Education by the Commissioner.
Additionally, Joan has presided over a Bored that was found in violation of New York State Open Meetings Laws.   And still, it is apparent that she fails to preside effectively over Bored meetings. Joan has lambasted teachers and staff in meetings, and has exhibited little compassion nor understanding.

Likely the most damaging conduct of Dr. Calkins is her use of children as ploys in her devious games. Teachers and community members have stated many students have reported their doctor, Joan Calkins, has asked them questions about their teachers, and Joan has acted to harm teachers she does not like.

Dr. Calkins ran for a second term on the Bored of Education in May 2012, and came in 3rd place failing to secure a 3 year term. However, her placement in 3rd did earn her the opportunity to serve out the remaining one year of the term of Kelly Harper, who resigned from the Bored in the Fall of 2011. It has been reported several times, that Dr. Kelly Harper resigned due to the behavior and actions of Joan Calkins.

So, Hamburg, are your schools better off today than they were 4 years ago?

Joan Calkins brought to Hamburg Steven Achramovitch, and she fails to accept this likely could have been her biggest failure in judgement.

Should Joan decide to run for re-election in May 2013, the members of the school community must use the ballot box and prevent her from further damaging the school district.

Isn't 2009 when the HTA leadership changed? Seems things went down hill then. Negative press, lawsuits, etc.

Please check your information when using someone's name in a post. Dr Harper's resignation had nothing to do with Dr Calkins.

I've heard that there is a citizen who speaks at every meeting in a less than respectful tone. People say they are amazed that the board president never loses her cool.

How does holding back on the vote for APPR until after elections keep the board from hitting back at teachers? The board could hit back anytime they want, including now. Your argument makes no sense.

Anonymous said...

The best way to fight a fight is with credibility. You damage your credibility when you tie your fight against APPR to high stakes testing. The testing of our kids is a different issue.

Your post states " lucy calkins, a guru of education intervened with NYSED, and the charges were denied by commissioner King." Are you alleging Lucy Calkins tampered with the law? How can you make statements like this?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous, 1:45 I know Dr. Harper, and she indicated to me personally that she felt bullied by Joan et.al. Seems pretty odd she jumped ship. Concerned has it right on this one.

What citizen speaks? I know that Joan tried to jam new anti allergy meds down the throat of the kid whose dad spoke recently about peanut allergies. I see lots to HTA knuckle heads sitting there like zombies...not knowing what is going on. The cheif negotiator comes to these meetings and she looks like she is in a foreign language class with no knowledge of what is being stated. The teachers need to get their act together....

TESTING AND APPR ARENT RELATED? WHAT IDIOT THINKS THIS????

Anonymous said...

There is no allegations that Lucy Calkins tampered with the law, because the Commish has his own laws. Check it out!!!! The Commish is an old Columbia buddy of Lucy. You know the ivy leagues who have never taught, and if they did not even long enough to get permanently certified.

Anonymous said...

Tammy teacher, can you read? A no vote for APPR doesn't make state testing go away, there are other, effective, avenues to protest state testing.

Did anyone from health and safety contact that parent? I've heard they did not, shameful.

Let us not forget that Joan only follows school district policy when its convent for her. The letter to the community that violates district policy Regulation 3180R School District Standards & Guidelines for Web publishing (which she helped write in 2009) is still up on the district website even after the violation was brought to the school boards attention of back in august…. I guess it’s good to be Queen Bully of Hamburg Schools.

"They are horrible teachers...Hamburg is full to the brim with them. Our union sucks, it always has sucked. "
Why not step up to the plate and do something about it? You are calling out your own colleagues as being awful teachers, awful union leaders. HTA elections are coming up, you seem to know all the answers, why don't you run for office? Just be prepared to be attacked on this blog.

I come on this blog all the time...the teachers have support. I am a hamburg teachers and other than a few, we have a good team. The unions sucks always has. I see that going back to C. Huen. He got paid for a full days work, and only worked until noon time. Ask his neighbors. What a turd that guy was. Why doesnt someone expose him for collecting over 90K per year and only working until 12 noon. He is the reason the union sucks plain and simple. The teachers are nice people, they are just lost with no leadership. Get a leader teachers and things will change. Otherwise keep sitting in the big pile of poop we have been in since the 90s. I dont care I am on top step and looking to the door. Get your act together asap.

That's Lucy Calkins sister? Dang, she looks like Edgar Winter a bit.

If those who find the status quo intolerable desire meaningful change, show Calkins the door this May. This action will put Sally Stephenson in line to succeed her as BOE president, after which it will be farewell to Achramo and his tax eating lawyers. The BOE can then ascend to a level of quality that has been absent for years.

Dr. Joan Calkins unfortunately believes that she is the Queen of the Hamburg School District. Can you imagine if all the school bored members started to prance around our schools just for the hell of it or in Joan's case to convince us to vote for her. Sorry 4 years and her vindictive nature has been exhibited loud and clear. Her Ego is the only thing important to her. She craves attention or as someone indicated she demands it. IF she was on this school bored for 3 years she would let Achramovitch continue on in his sly, vulgar and disrespectful and dishonest mismanagement style.

We need change. This May cast your vote for change. Our students and children need an environment where morale is high. I remember past administrations who respected us and cared about us, our children and students.

Stever wants nothing better than to hit back at us through Joan & Company, their record speaks for itself.

There has been dark days in the past. in the late 70's a former wife of Greg Davis, filed and won a sexual harrassment against the school district. Principal & teacher at Armor, in the past few years school board members left due to losing and misleading the public regarding lost millions of transportation dollars to the district. Matt Dils is the only one left from that bosrd that didn't pay attention to the $$$. Next same school board same deal transfered akpprox $85,000. in estate money left to the district transfered from school district funds to Hamburg Foundation not an arm of the school district. The supt at the time resigned, the school board members minus dils and sipprell stayed on. The arrival of Steve Achramovitch has been a disaster for education. I am sure it will all come out sooner than later. But for now I agree it is certainly a dark time with the decisions of Calkins and Achramovitch.

testing and teacher evaluations go hand and hand this is a fact. Eventually enough will come out that this is not the best for students.

So much time is spent on this blog dissing a prominent member of this community. SHAME ON YOU!!!!! Not one fact has been presented just a lot of innuendos. What about the hundreds of children and families this woman has helped. Perhaps the chief blogger has never been lucky enough to be a mother or unlucky enough to have a sick child and need a doctor. I have 4 children and anytime I needed the services of her practice, they have always been there. Perhaps if you are ever blessed with love and children of your own you will not have so much time or need for this venue for your frustration. I will say a pray for you tonight.

It depends who you talk to some parents love her and some parents hate her, it is a mixed bag. Problem Dr. Calkins may be a good md but as sb pres a disappointment A vote for Dr. Calkins is a vote for a horrible supt. who lacks compassion and the ability to care about this school community. It is apparent that Steve Achramo only cares to keep himself in power, nothing else matters to him.

NOW I AM ALSO A TEACHER WHO SHARES A DIFFERENT VIEW. I WILL NOT SUPPORT JOAN CALKINS BECAUSE OF HER OVERLOOKING OR BEING A PART OF WHAT MR ACHROVITCH TIRED TO PULL ON OUR HTA MEMBERSHIP. STEVE & JOAN TRIED TO PULL THE WOOL OVER OUR EYES THIS PAST JANUARY WITH APPR AND IT DIDN'T BODE WELL WITH US.

NOT ALL MD'S DESERVE OUR SUPPORT OR RESPECT. FORMER PATIENT

We do not share your same opinion of dr. calkins. Many have left her practice because of negative gossip , i didn't want to hear or engage in. I also didn't want my kid to hear negative talk about people we know, care and associate with. there is an old statement that you don't always know who is friends with who in this community. i don't care for the gossip or the untruths. sorry enough said.

Anonymous said...

Didn't you know that Dr. Calkins is never wrong

She still defends steve achramovitch. "it would be too costly to get rid of the supt." One guess who made that statement.I know nothing about her md skills, I do know that she has abused her position as school board pres. and that is not good for my kids and students.

sorry said...

Joan referenced that Greg wichlacz "has run this district into the ground", that is when she made her move to become sb pres. Greg left out in the cold, she refused to put him back on the sb after he interviewed for the vacated seat of Kelly Harper

I .didn't then or now share her opinion on Greg. It appears that Dr. Calkins herself is the one allowing the supt to run our district into the ground.

damage to schools is the supt and his supporters and dr calkins is one a supporter. stating a fact

no vote said...

Her practice better be there for our sick kids, that is her job and that is what she is paid for. This is expected of all Doctors.

We are not voting for Doctor Calkins as a medical doctor,we are voting for her and achramovitch as school board members/ calkins is steve achramovithc

I have children but don't care to hear the politics of my kids school at their office visits. My concentration is my disabled child not petty school politics. Lets get a discussion regarding opting out and the harmful testing on our kids and their personal information being compromised. Profiling my kid I object, my kid is special to many of us.

Upsetting as this may be I have to express why many have abandoned Joan & Steve. It starts with deception.

Appeals process as stated by state ed. "the district (Hamburg)has developed and appeals procedure (see document). Where was the document that the school was not providing to our membership. The big question why?

Let me quote the document and you see why we had a problem.

From districts APPR APPEAL PROCESS

"the supt will convene and appr review panel to review appeal. The appr review panel will consist of 2 members of the HTA as chosen by the unit pres or designee and 2 district representatives as chosen by the supt....this recommendation will be delivered to the supt who will make a FINAL determination of the appeal within 10 school days upon receipt of the recommendation panel.... THE DECISION OF THE SUPT SHALL BE FINAL AND BINDING ON ALL PARTIES. IT SHALL NOT BE SUBJECT TO ANY FURTHER APPEAL THROUGH ANY OTHE PROCESS INCLUDING GRIEVANCE OR ARBITRATION CONTAINED WITHIN THE COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT.../THE APPEALS PROCEDURE SHALL constitute the sole and exlusive means for initiating, reviewing and resolving any and all challenges and appeals related to a unit members appr or teacher improvement plan. unit members may not resort to any other grievance or arbitration procedures contained within the collective bargaining agreement or to any administrative or judical forum for the resolution of challenges and appeals related to the apppr or teacher improvement plan." This sneaky deal speaks for itself. and then the bd pres joan says that it is mandated. yes an appeals process is a mandate, yes but not this one sided deal for the supt and thus joan. Either joan never read the document and trusted achramovitch or she by design has some teachers in mind to target. Please either way we deserved better. We did the right thing and turned that document down. Thanks to the new bd member ss who raised the roof on this, it may have passed. we have a fresh start and now we can have in place what FAIR.

School personnel will make the difference in this school board election as well as the budget. Budget adoption for sure, but the other part is you have to ask yourself about school morale and all that has transpired under the Achramovitch and Calkins administration. I have my answer, you need to ask yourself how they have effected you and your building.

Dr Joan Calkins is compensated well for her services as a medical doctor. You would expect any DR. to do their job.

To anonymous 4/9 10:58 pm

You forgot to mention the hundreds of children( our students )and their families we help. Many teachers go over and beyond what is expected of us in the classroom. We deserve credit, respect and a thank you is greatly appreciated.

It is not only our job but our passion to help children in life long learning. We try to reach all our kids and expecially those who need the extras. We see our students all year not just an office visit and a chat, but everyday interaction. We deserve respect and not only us but all those that make a school day run smoothly, Sec., caferteria staff, maint., and support that is given from Ptsa, and parents who support us. Yes we deserve what you are suggesting for Dr. Calkins. I do remind everyone we are there every day for our kids not just an office visit. We also handle emergencies on all levels. Thank you everyone who supports our school community. Please change this May
