Hamburg Horizons Summer School abruptly cancelled leaving scores of children out in the cold!

Concerned Hamburger received many emails today regarding the Hamburg Central Schools Horizon Summer School.  link: Hamburg Schools Horizon Summer School  The Horizon Summer School was scheduled to start July 9 and run through early August.

The Hamburg Central School district started advertising the summer school program on the district webpage several months ago, registration occurred, parents paid, and schedules were made.  Early this morning just past midnight, Sharon Raymond, a community volunteer who was administering the program sent the below email in purple out to parents, teachers, principals and supporters of the program.  Ms. Raymond abruptly dropped the program that she claims she, Joan Calkins and Hamburg Board of Education member Patty Brunner Collins got off the ground.

Ms. Raymond claims she is unable to run the program due to the departure of Mr. Achramovitch.  Concerned opines that this is the most rotten of all actions on the part of an adult.  Ms. Raymond, did it occur to you or Patricia Brunner Collins to advise the Hamburg Board of Education of your needs?  Ms. Raymond did it occur to you that perhaps another community volunteer would step up and replace you or help you muddle through the transitions?   You claim Ms. Raymond that you "personally know how much this helps children", but did you consider how an abrupt cancellation would harm children who were looking forward to a fun summer of learning?

And a bigger question, Ms. Raymond, where is all the money that parents paid for summer school?  You claim, you will be refunding money to parents, but in reviewing the contract on the district webpage it clearly states no refunds after late June. Where are the tuition dollars, who were they paid to, and who is overseeing the finances of this program?   If this is a school district sponsored program, why couldn't board member Patty Brunner Collins and the Board of Education find a replacement for Ms. Raymond?

Concerned smells a rat- a smelly political rat who cares little about how this decision will impact students and families.  Shame on you Ms. Raymond, Joan Calkins and Patty Brunner Collins, other solutions to Ms. Raymond's concerns are plentiful.  Rather your actions smack of cry baby status.  Guess what Ms. Raymond- children do not care about superintendents and board politics.  Kids care about what they can learn at school, and parents and teachers love to see kids grow.

Thank you for stealing this away from Hamburg kids this summer.

Subject: Cancellation of Hamburg Horizons Summer School program
Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2013 00:13:39 -0400

Dear parents, teachers, principals and supporters of the program.

As a parent of the Hamburg School district and a volunteer administrator, I have been running Hamburg Horizons for the past two summers.  I approached School Board members and Superintendent Achramovitch with the idea of a tuition based summer school program in spring of 2011.   With Patti Brunner Collins, Superintendent Achramovitch and Dr. Calkins I was able to get the program running and have run the program the last two summers.

I took a personal risk to run this program with the leadership of the district behind me.  Now that the leadership of Superintendent Achramovitch is gone, I am going to cancel the school this year as I have no one to work within the district with no leader named to take his place.

I hope you understand.  Believe me, I know personally how much this helps a child….I hope we can get a program back next year.

I sincerely apologize to everyone involved, however, I  feel that there is a great lesson here, that we can put together programs that are not supported solely by tax dollars.
I will be calling all families and teachers tomorrow.  If I don’t reach you, please feel free to call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx  I will be sending out refund checks by Friday.  You will receive a full refund of your payments.
This was completely unexpected and I apologize again.
With a heavy heart and much sadness,

Sharon Raymond

Should teachers cancel their classes in Sept if a superintendent is not found? These programs and the classes our children take run with or without a superintendent. All we need is a teacher to run the program or class, administrators just sit in their office anyway.

Dear concerned hamburger...you know nothing about anything and obviously are using your amendments rights to bash whomever you want to bash...gee, I wonder what side you are on? no question there...you are abusive and frankly stupid...I can see you in your home stamping your feet saying.. be nice to Sally..be nice to Sally! She doesn't need your help..unless of course.. well never mind.. you wouldn't understand it anyway. I understand you have the right to your opinion and most people would welcome a differing opinion but its the way you say things... you sound like a little CRY BABY all the time!

as for the summer school.. Ms. Raymond will be refunding the money and just because it says "no refunds after June" doesn't mean money cannot be returned. She gave up a lot of her time and effort (as did Patti and Joan) to make this summer school happen.. and now you are bashing them because they didn't ask for your permission to cancel?

You are a narrow minded pip squeak who doesn't have the guts to use your name. Tell us who you are so we can meet face to face and then things will get accomplished. This type of blog accomplishes NOTHING!

Seems like this is a person the district should not have backed. if arrangements for space, teachers, transportation, etc have already been made can't the funds be transferred to the district and the district replace the 'director' that stepped down? The kids should,t be punished for petty and impulsive actions by adults.

Where can we meet face to face Anonymous 3;23? Really- the lady left the kids high and dry and you want to meet face to face? What ya gonna do? Go all mayor Moses on the blogger. Thats right- lets fight with fists- because thats what we want our kids to learn. You know, the kids who will be walking the streets of Hamburg because Mz. Raymond cant function without steve? So where is this money that many parents paid? Whose bank account is it in? Some of the classes wer over $100.00- and there were fund raisers. WHERE IS THE MONEY? ALL THE PROGRAMS WERE ON DISTRICT PROPERTY, AND THE VILLAGE HAD A HAND IN THIS. WHERE IS THE MONEY? IS MAYOR MOSES INVOLVED. I bet Mz. Raymond is a nice lady- maybe got fooled by some less than honest people.

Is Mz Raymond a real administrator or is she like Joan and just pretends?

Wait. Stop the bus. Our district used to always provide summer school for our students until our summer school was replaced by Hamburg Horizons summer school. Before summer school started there were applications and interviews to determine which certified teachers would be teaching summer school. Since Hamburg Central's summer school has been replaced (without any input from teachers as usual)by Hamburg Horizons many people have been wondering, "Who teaches at Hamburg Horizons summer school?" Now that we know who the organizers were, can concerned find out who the teachers were? Lastly, a summer school does not need a superintendent or a school board member to run it. It only needs a director and teachers and a district that supports it. Is, "We've put our time into it." a way of saying we're keeping the money that was raised through fundraising? If so then I'd say there is the reason that running a tuition based (for profit?) summer school on public school property is a bad idea. Mz. Raymond may need to do the right thing while she still can.

DEAR MISS RAYMOND, MANY THANKS FOR SCREWING UP THE SUMMER MONTHS FOR THE PARENTS AND KIDS OF HAMBURG. FUNDING PROGRAMS WITHOUT TAXPAYER ASSISTANCE IS CALLED PRIVATE SCHOOL. SO, WHY WAS THE PUBLIC SCHOOL ADVERTISING YOUR PRIVATE SCHOOL ON THE DISTRICT WEBPAGE? YOU ARE SHAMEFUL FOR CANCELLING THIS PROGRAM. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, BUT REALLY LADY???

COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED? DO YOU READ THE pAPER LADY. WE KNOW YOU ARE THICK WITH JOAN- BUT WHAT DID YOU THINK? I WANT TO KNOW WHERE MY MONEY IS- WHOSE BANK ACCOUNT? I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE MY MONEY WAS WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. I AM CALLING THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY ABOUT THIS...IT SEEMS LIKE FRAUD!

Started with right intent (I believe) but extremely irresponsible, to cancel in the dark of the night at the last possible minute. Abruptly cancelling a program that benefits children. Not only did I plan on not having child care for that time period, but our child would benefit.

I would suggest this was political, bitter at the outcome of the election. Why punish children?

Bitter spiteful, disappointing, and to use a lame excuse supt gone. Did Ms. Raymond not know that the supt resigned on his own free will. Why would Ms Raymond not elicit someone else to run the horizon program?

Punishing the new school board or the kids?

Why use our children as pawns?

Sorry for the loss of this private program for our children.

We are not sorry for the supt leaving, he is capable of doing. Lot of harm in 5 weeks.

Staff extremely happy, we did not support Joan or Steve. We have distrust of the two for good reasons. 73 percent in private ballot listed distrust if supt & sb pres Calkin ,

Joan is playing dirty again. Does she have thugs out on the road following people home or are her spys lurking behind corners? She has her uninformed, but nice, mommies from the district make dull signs to hackle BOE members with. Those women at the BOE meeting on Tuesday were rude and obnoxious. If Joan and Matt were still on the BOE they would had the police carry the mommies away in straight jackets. Joan you show your real colors.

Being supported by the district doesn't mean anything. She wasn't an employee of the system and therefore has the right to cancel services at anytime she sees fit, and furthermore, if she was employed by the district she could still leave she would just be required to give notice. Maybe she did choose to leave because of the change to the school board, so what? She's a private citizen and can do what she wants. If you all want a summer program so bad then do what she did and start one yourself. Screaming and yelling on here isn't going to change anything.

5:32- seriously because she was a volunteer that gave her the right to be irresponsible? Really, you sound like an idiot. If Mrs. Raymond was running a private school during the summer and using the district webpage and district property to run a private school, and she got these services for free, then I as a taxpayer have serious issue with her, joan calkins and patti collins, and the former superintendent. where is all the money from the fund raiser? This is super shady, and maybe the DA should be called. Sounds like BS to me. Just sayin

People are irresponsible all the time. Get over it.
