It just doesn't add up.

Concerned is Concerned. In a email sent to Concerned Hamburger from someone claiming to be a math teacher in the Hamburg Central School District the following story was sent. (in purple)

Concerned Hamburger,

I read your blog this morning. Sometimes, I really get upset with some of the things that are written on this blog, but it is like road kill- I just can't help myself I have to look. So, I looked this morning.  I find some of your posts crude, but factual. I rarely read the comments.  I am writing to you because the position that was filled in the Math Department at HHS should have been filed in November 2012.

In the fall '12 one of our great Math teachers move on in his career to an administrative job in a local school district. We were all sad to see him go, he is one of those people who should never leave teaching, but we are glad for him that he moved on to a new career.  It was a great loss to Hamburg. He had been teaching in at HHS since 2002.

In November, the vacant math job at HHS was filed with a substitute teacher was was interviewed by a small group of people- I do not know who, nor does anyone in the Math Dept.   The district hire a long term substitute instead of hiring a probationary teacher, a very unusual departure from what I have known in Hamburg. (I was a long term substitute for two years before getting hired when a job opened I interviewed along with many other people who applied.)
In November, the vacated teaching position was filled with a long term substitute who quit sometime in February 2013.  She was only on the job for about 3 months. To replace the long term substitute,  the district filled the position with a substitute who was not a long term substitute rather a general substitute teacher.  To the best of my knowledge and that of my colleagues this person was never interviewed. She came to HHS in February and taught geometry until the June of this year.  The teacher who was hired this morning was the general substitute, not a long term substitute.  I will admit I do not know her nor have I heard anything bad about her (even if I did, I wouldn't release it in the cyber world :-).

The problem here is NOT the teacher. The problem is the district, and dare I say the High School Principal, Dr. Jetter and the former superintendent.   When the tenured Math teacher resigned in November, the job should have been posted then as a permanent position- not a long term substitute job.
Instead, the district in an effort to same some money, I suppose,  hired a long term substitute, who quit, and a second substitute who the board voted to hire this morning for the permanent position. This is highly out of the ordinary, and I am asking you to please post my email.  I know people read this blog, and I know I can post here anonymously without fear of getting hijacked at work.   I am disgusted with what happened as we never had the chance to reach out an find the best teacher to replace one of our very best veteran teachers, who left to become an administrator.  It is my guess that this is why there was a special meeting this morning, it is my guess that the administration does not want the new board to know what went on at HHS when a probationary teaching position opened up in November 2012.

I am writing this on the fly, so please don't go all Concerned Hamburger on me if I have any typos. I am a numbers person not a poet :-)

Concerned looked at the Board minutes and the teacher's story adds up, the district seems to be trying to save money by hiring substitutes in replace of permanent jobs.  So readers, we have conflicting stories, but the Board Minutes do not lie- so we hope.  Hamburg parents you should be very unhappy with this way of doing business, the district's actions do not add up.

I'm a little surprised that it was Sally that voted against the math teacher hiring. But she was right, the correct thing to do would be to post the job vacancy for a week or two and see who and with what qualifications applied for it.

As for the teacher that did get hired for it maybe she will turn out to be a great teacher and maybe not. Or maybe she'll just be burned out in a year or two and want to move on to something else. There's always a gamble in it (i.e. the long term sub that lasted three months) but the board and administration does own it to the taxpayers to post these openings and see who and in what numbers people with the paper qualifications would like to come and teach in the district.

What was done today opens the door to nepotism and other unsavory hiring practices.

I'll add that as the school district does take state and federal dollars that what went on this morning will eventually get them on the wrong side of fair hiring and equal opportunity laws. And that can be expensive.

Unsavory is the word for this. I was passed over twice for a position and finally hired. I went through the entire hiring process with work experience and positive recommendations.

CHECK THIS OUT THE math teacher 1 month permanent certification when she was hired. effective date of

9/2012

what experience did she come with? One months permanent certification.

Look into it further and it is very shady a lot that Rick Jetter has lied to the school board about. Perhaps the bd president doesn't care? Just a different face. Jetter is apparently the new Achramovitch. We have been fooled. FIRE JETTER we don't need another liar running our schools.

Science.

Ok, from what i read Aaron Grupka resigned in November, and the Board voted to fill his position with a substitute teacher called M. Patti, who was inintially cert. and they agreed to pay her $27k. Then I see M. Patti resigned effective 2-8-13 and then magically K. Grisanti was hired in MArch with an effective date of 2-8. So, when were the interviews, when was the evaluation- my guess is Rick Jetter is a liar. I heard today that Rick Jetter is not telling the BOE the truth- ask the nursese at BVS. Jim is working very hard to keep his job. Smelly Fish- yeah and sloppy BOE members.

See your union rep. File a grievance via your local. If necessary forget the law and wildcat strike. Teachers need to take control and show the administration that they come first

all comments must be approved by the blog author. WHAT kind of free speech is that. If you got any balls at all you will post my suggestion for the teachers to strike this fall

This is nuts. Now everyone is just looking around for something to get angry about. Isn't watching a teacher ACTUALLY WORK for several months a MUCH better indicator of her teaching ability than an interview? I'm sure she also had to be interviewed to get the substitute position in the first place. You don't just call a school district and say "Hey, I'm a teacher!", and then they say "Great, come on in!". You have to apply, submit recommendations, be interviewed, be fingerprinted, and have your references checked. As to the fact that she's a young teacher (recently certified with little experience), so what? Everyone has to have a first job. Didn't all of you? Same goes for Dr. Jetter-- so he hasn't been a District-level administrator before coming to Hamburg-- again, everyone has to do their job for the first time at some point. None of you has had anything to say on this blog about Dr. Jetter for the last three years, until now. Please remember also that he is only the INTERIM Superintendent. There will hopefully be an exhaustive search and interview process, with all District stakeholders consulted. Last time, that process yielded a less-than-stellar choice, but this time there are kid-friendly members of the SB...who will hopefully make a better choice. That search will take time, and would all of you have us be WITHOUT a leader at all until that process is complete? RELAX, everyone. Deep breaths. This math teacher must have done a great job in her substitute position. I can't think of a better way to earn a permanent job than to demonstrate talent and ability in practice.

Lets slow dowm a minute.

New school board made a decision in what they believed was sound advise. Now that being said, they apparently were misled by our acting supt. Now that being said again, what needs to be done is correct the mistake, investigate Rick J. independently and post the job properly, otherwise this will continue. We have enough bad decisions made here lets correct this one promptly. Sorry we do not want business as usual and you will not save face by pretending this did not happen. We will be loud and public on this one. If an independent investigation is not done and this job posted we will go public and no just here but with all news venues.

When you make a mistake or act in bad faith take the high road and make it right. Sound advise

There is a very odd and dislusional person who wakes up at 6:45 and writes crazy things. Hazel, is that you? Dont you realize you have a screw loose, and that we know who you are. The people you are writing about have no problem dragging your ass thru a long very long legal battle which will cause you to fall to you knees. Ask the boyz on So. Park AVE.

if you had any Balls, you would bring your suggestion (for all teachers to strike up at the next board meeting, not on this blog site. The BOE need to know your concerns that you/we are unhappy with the way they are handing our children's education

Let us see how much effort goes into this cover up. Jetter failed to mention the sub teacher who was in for a Hamburg Middle School Teacher, who was out on a LONG TERM LEAVE. Lets ask some questions about the job in the middle school that wasnt interviewed for. Jetter is a liar. Neither math teachers were interview. This new board is a joke. Lets see how hard they work to cover up that the district has been filling probationary teacher union jobs with non union workers- this is illegal. The teachers union should file charges with PERB and the new board can have that on their mamby pamby record. If the union doesnt file charges the teachers should sue the president and all the officers. This is a big issue and Jetter is working hard to cover it all up. File charges UNION- this is union busting.

Sub teacher are not interviewed. They send in the proper paper work, fingerpringing, backround check and letters of recommendation. NO INTERVIEWS, sorry school board you have hired a teachers without interviewing and you acting supt told you otherwise. Now lets see how they are going to spin this one. The sb needs to make inquiries into Rick Jetters reason for lying to our sb. SB needs to post job and do what is right for all our kids. Get the best teacher out there to teach our kids.

I am writing now as I do not feel retaliation will happen with this current BOE. So many layoffs in the last 2 years: teachers, aides, clerical, custodial - as well as positions just being eliminated and some of the eliminated positions being filled with part timers. Who was hurt? The students. Please look at the clerical positions. Union rules were not always followed. The same amount of work exists - so many are stressed and under pressure because even with less people the same amount of wokr has to be done. Errors are made; short cuts taken. This BOE needs to look at ALL the staff cuts and reassignments. The district over the years has eliminated clerical positions and then made them part time (in the ADM building now) and there are teacher aides doing clerical work (HMS) and there are retirees working part time and collecting their retirment. All that is asked is that the BOE talk to the staff, see what was done and find out why and re-examine what was done and if they feel the right steps were taken - fine - if not change it to make it better for everyone - just please take a look. Thank you.

the problem is the human resourse guy, he should know this is in violation of our contract. He either knows, not on top of it, or doesn't care. Cannot blame Achramovitch he may of started it, but Mr. Jetter continues to not do the right thing.
