Cooler Heads Prevail

A blogger posted the following insightful remarks (purple).  These are great questions that should elevate the discussion of the current state of affairs in the Hamburg School District.  Thank you blogger for your thoughts on these important topics.  Hopefully this will generate some serious discussion about how the district might fix the predicament the Hamburg School Board has created with taxpayers dollars.

"What some supporters of the Yoviene cabal who post here refuse to understand is that you can absolutely take a stand for what you believe in, but when that stand extends to using your board faction's voting majority to kick a dissenter off the board for incredibly minor things like merely saying "Santa Claus came early to the Jetter household", it's gone way too far.

And the very idea that the Yoviene school board's supporters actually believe that it was right to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars prosecuting Forcucci for NON-CRIMINAL conduct while awarding Jetter for CRIMINAL conduct should entirely undermine their credibility.

HERE ARE A FEW QUESTIONS FOR THE YOVIENE FACTION SUPPORTER--instead of constantly whining about people who don't share your views of Forcucci and Stephenson (who you appear to be obsessed with), answer these questions:

Do you believe that it is responsible to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on attorneys' fees chasing an non-criminal with politeness problems while you are simultaneously cutting the kids' K-12 intrumural programs, refusing to fund girls' hockey, and not providing anywhere near sufficient Common Core training for teachers and parents?

Do you believe that it is proper for the board to spend money on attorneys to provide public relations advice on how to handle the media regarding the secret hearings controversy?

Do you believe that it was smart or proper to spend so much money on the Forcucci prosecution that it put the board in a position where it did not have the funds necessary to fight Jetter, forcing the board to offer him a huge settlement after admitting to criminal conduct?

Don't you believe that when Jetter was exposed as a criminal who victimized his supporters and the community at large with his dishonesty, Mr. Yoviene and his faction missed the opportunity to reach out to Forcucci and resolve the hearings with a compromise (especially considering that Jetter was a chief accuser)?

Wouldn't compromising with Forcucci after the Jetter drama and moving forward have been a MUCH MORE ETHICAL choice--and much smarter--than continuing this incredibly expensive fight where the price, so far, includes the board caving in to a criminal and giving him more than $100,000 simply because the board is worn out by its continuing fight against someone who has committed no crimes?

When all the bills are finally in, from the full cost of the board's Forcucci adventure to the ill-advised settlement awarded to Jetter--do you understand the rest of the community's concern that that HUGE pile of money could have been spent on teachers to alleviate elementary school overcrowding or vital Common Core training or kids' sports or any number of other needs that are important to kids? How can you justify the incredible costs of the board's political infighting to already strapped taxpayers?

Yoviene school board supporters, you can contribute to a healthy discussion on this blog by answering these questions. They are the questions of most of the community, not just a small group. Get a dialogue going that is more than just your usual personal defenses of people on your side of the aisle.

In short, step back from your personal involvement with the personalities at the center of this mess and consider what the rest of the adults in Hamburg are seriously worried about."

A dialogue makes good sense, but the blogger refuses to print any criticism of Stephenson or Forcucci

No one's defending Forcucci being impolite, but removal of an elected official and invalidating the choice made by the voters should be reserved for criminal conduct or very serious unethical conduct. Forcucci was basically accused of being a harpy, and by the standards applied to her by this board, almost every elected official in New York State's job is in jeopardy. Her alleged discourtesy is regrettable, but it doesn't come anywhere near the seriousness required to nullify an election.

And the Stephenson thing is just totally bizarre. To outsiders not intimately involved with the personalities on the board and in the groups lobbying the board, it looks like some people are unbelievably obsessed with Sally Stephenson.

Remember, most of the Hamburg community isn't involved in the infighting and personal disputes that have just captured this board. We honestly have no idea what has caused people to lose their minds over Stephenson much less understand why there has been such a campaign to transfer the hate for Stephenson to Forcucci.

To the uninitiated, it appears that tons of money has been spent driving Forcucci off the board because she votes in the minority with Stephenson. It seems like the board majority can't take down Stephenson, so they've turned their sights on Forcucci.

In my opinion, that's not only amateur gamesmanship, but it betrays a seriously disturbing board focus on weird personality disputes and obsessions. They should leave that stuff at the door when they put on their elected representative hats, but it seems that Stephenson is a bone that the Yoviene faction is completely focused on to the exclusion of most other concerns--like fiscal responsibility.

But, hell, I'm just a member of the community who really doesn't care to waste time trying to figure out why adults can't act like adults.

This should be copied to the newspaper and The Hamburg Sun (ie., not a newspaper) so that it is unavoidable.

9:18 Keen observer, but you see the real target is Kavanagh. Cha Man says it in the paper. Lets face it, the truth is coming to the surface, and some of these "do gooders" are not gonna look so good. Seems to me Dan is behind a lot of this stuff. You know take his obsession with Sally. I think the whole BOARD should go, esp. Tom Flynn. He is a whiney 3 year old doing the boys dirty work. But when the public gets a sniff of the truth, they will see what is really going on here. Those of you involved are likely to agree, at least in your tiny little brains. Good observation. Forcucci does whats right, and some people in Hamburg who can't see right from wrong have trouble with that. Some people have been slithering around this community sucking on the breast of the taxpayers for years, and now their little gravy train is in jeopardy. Take a look at Dans email buddies- those Hamburg people that think they are important, but they really arent. This is a tiny community which really has no importance what so ever. Maybe in August when the fair comes to town- thats all that Hamburg is one big circus and sideshow- distracting the public from reality. Like the Fair- a profit making organizations that the taxpayers pay for. A perfect metaphor for a shallow community with some not so bright people. Silly Hamburgers- go join 4 H and knit a blanket. Silly little minded people who are terrified of anyone who sniffs around and smells the rats. Nice place to live, if you are blind.

To Anonymous 8:53--

How do you have a dialogue if your prerequisite is that you will only dialogue with people who criticize others the way you want them to?

The point is that all the personalities should be abandoned. Answer the quiestions about fiscal responsibility and duty to the kids and taxpayers without resorting to "but . . . but {insert Sally or Dan or Dave or whoever} did this or said that." That's the only way to end this mess. Everyone stepping away from the personalities and admitting what should be incredibly obvious to everybody, regardless of affiliation or what camp you're in:

SPENDING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON INFIGHTING BETWEEN ADULTS ON THE SCHOOL BOARD HURTS THE KIDS AND THE COMMUNITY.

It's that simple.
